The reserves in Chirnside Park each have a different focus. When choosing a destination, it is worth first distinguishing between landscaped play areas, a wetland and a facility for dogs. These differences are particularly clear at Botanica Reserve, Kimberley Reserve and Belsay Reserve Chirnside Urban Park.

Play area and wetland at Botanica Reserve

The play area at Botanica Reserve is fully fenced and has many individual features. These include a large rope climbing dome, several swings and a long, curved yellow slide. The slide is reached by a steep climb—a distinctive feature among the play equipment mentioned. There is also a wooden and stone balance trail, totem poles arranged like a small maze, a large log bench and a small wooden bridge. Climbing, swinging, balancing and exploring the small maze are different activities available in the same play area.

The playground’s design is also clearly specified: it is fully fenced and has two entrances. A blue-painted concrete path runs through the play area and provides a designated space for scooters. Alongside the individual play features, there is therefore also a clearly designated area for riding scooters. At the lowest point of Botanica Reserve, there is also a wetland with extensive reed beds. Within the same reserve, landscaped play areas sit alongside a reed-filled wetland with its own distinct character.

Dog agility park at Kimberley Reserve

Kimberley Reserve is home to a 5,000-square-metre fenced dog agility park where dogs are allowed off leash. The dog park is in the north-western part of the reserve. Its features include an agility area, a tunnel and gardens to explore; logs serve as seating, and there is also a water tap. The facilities therefore include features for exercise and exploration as well as seating and a water tap. When making your choice, the expressly stated option to let dogs run off leash is a specific difference from the other features described.

Play structure and information at Belsay Reserve

Belsay Reserve Chirnside Urban Park combines information and a play structure in a different way. It has information boards about various flying animals, as well as a balloon play structure described as the first of its kind in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. The boards focus on the animals, while the balloon structure is the specific play feature. This combination gives the park its own thematic focus, alongside the activity equipment at Botanica and the dog facility at Kimberley.

If you are choosing between Botanica and Belsay, the difference is not just the form of the play structure: Botanica brings together several types of physical activity, while Belsay combines a balloon play structure with information boards about flying animals. You can therefore choose based on the variety of play activities or on the combination of play and information about animals.
