In Balwyn North, different interests have specific destinations to explore: netball courts, ovals for several sports, a fenced dog exercise area, and public art. So which place interests you most depends primarily on what you’d like to do during your stay. Each park has its own focus, rather than offering the same activities as the others.

Sports facilities: netball, cricket and more

Macleay Park has eight netball courts managed by the Boroondara Netball Association. If netball is a key part of your plans, the courts offer a clear point of reference. Hislop Park has a different focus: it’s suitable for small events and barbecues, as well as cricket, football and outdoor fitness training. This makes it easy to distinguish between dedicated netball facilities and a broader mix of sports and other uses.

Getting to Hislop Park is also straightforward: bus route 285 stops on Balwyn Road, right outside the park. Check the timetable before your visit, as public transport services may change.

Two ovals at Myrtle Park

At Myrtle Park, you can choose between the eastern and western ovals. The eastern oval is home to one of Boroondara’s baseball fields. The western oval is suitable for cricket and baseball games. If you’re interested in baseball, either oval could be a useful point of reference; cricket is specifically associated with the western oval. This distinction helps you identify the right sports focus without implying that both areas have the same uses.

Dog exercise area and practical access

Gordon Barnard Reserve has a dedicated, fenced area where dogs can be off leash. If this is important for your visit, check the current conditions in advance, as facilities may change. The clearly designated area distinguishes this reserve from the sports facilities that are the focus at Macleay, Hislop and Myrtle parks.

Two parks have named entrances to their car parks for visitors arriving by car. Greythorn Park’s car park is accessible via Alpha Street, while Macleay Park’s is accessible via Belmore Road. Plan your route using the street associated with the park you’re visiting, and check current access arrangements before you travel, as they may change. This information applies to the car parks at the two locations named.

The Greythorn Icons: art with a local connection

The Greythorn Icons are located near the Greythorn Shopping Centre on Doncaster Road. The installation consists of five statues representing the local Greythorn community. The City of Boroondara commissioned them in 1999–2000, with the Greythorn Traders Association and the city council also involved in their creation. This public art offers a different focus from the parks’ sports and recreational facilities.

Balwyn North therefore offers several distinct interests to choose from: netball at Macleay Park, a range of activities at Hislop Park, cricket and baseball at Myrtle Park, a fenced dog exercise area at Gordon Barnard Reserve, and local art at the Greythorn Icons. Use these differences to decide which destinations suit your stay. For each activity, the specific details about the sports facility, bus stop, car park or artwork are what matter.
