A three-kilometre walking loop along Honeysuckle Creek, bird habitats and memorial sites give you different ways to plan a trip to Violet Town. Local art, local history and cycling are also among the town’s attractions. For your stay, you can choose a focus rather than trying to fit all your interests into a single itinerary.
Nature and trails in Violet Town
The Honeysuckle Creek Walk is a three-kilometre loop along Honeysuckle Creek in the Violet Town Recreation Reserve. The Honeysuckle Creek Walking Track has shaded sections and seating. As these features may change, check conditions before your visit.
A walking track in Shadforth Reserve loops around the horse training course. Remnant native vegetation and abundant birdlife add to the nature experience there. Violet Town Bush Nursing Centre Wetlands provide habitat for local birds. These offer different nature experiences: a track around the training course, with vegetation and birdlife in Shadforth Reserve, and a wetland that serves as a habitat for birds.
Local history, art and remembrance
The exhibitions at the Ian Errey Museum cover selected topics or significant past events in the history of Violet Town and the district. The Violet Town Heritage Walk includes an old house on the town’s first surveyed block, allotment No. 1. The allotment number gives the walk a tangible connection to the town’s early surveying.
Behind the Ian Errey Museum, BackArt Gallery displays works by local artists in exhibitions with free entry. Opening arrangements and the exhibition program may change; check both before visiting. The gallery offers an art-focused experience, while the museum and Heritage Walk provide different ways to explore the history of the town and district.
Violet Town also commemorates the Southern Aurora. A memorial garden beside the railway station shares information about the train, the train accident and the efforts of local volunteers. A plaque at the Southern Aurora memorial commemorates the 1969 train accident. Alongside the event itself, the memorial garden also highlights the local response.
Market and cycling
The Violet Town Community Market is held on the second Saturday of each month from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Recreation Reserve on Tulip Street in Violet Town. Check the exact date before your trip so you can fit the market into your plans.
Cycling around Violet Town offers routes of varying lengths on sealed roads as well as rougher and more challenging unsealed roads. There are also many flat cycling routes in and around Violet Town. When choosing a route, consider both its length and road surface, and check the conditions and suitability of the route before setting out.
The annual Ride the Ranges event features routes of 30, 85 or 130 kilometres, several of which pass through Violet Town. If you want to include the event in your travel plans, check the current dates before travelling. This will help you distinguish a regular cycling trip from a stay planned around the event.
