Tsaghkadzor combines the history of a medieval monastery and a house museum dedicated to the Orbeli brothers with a cable car and winter sports. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: are you especially interested in historic sites, panoramic views or sports? This lets you plan your trip around your interests instead of packing every activity into a tight schedule.
Kecharis: Monastery and educational history
Kecharis was one of medieval Armenia’s important cultural and spiritual centers. In the 12th and 13th centuries, it was also an important religious center and had an advanced school. Construction continued until the middle of the 13th century. This historical context links the site’s religious and educational role with a specific period of construction. The main group of the complex comprises four churches, two chapels and a vestibule. Kecharis is therefore not limited to a single church building: several distinct structures make up the main group. Visitors interested in the history of monasteries can explore both the site’s historical significance and the scale of the complex.
The Orbeli Brothers House Museum
The brothers Ruben, Levon and Hovsep were born in Tsaghkadzor. The Orbeli Brothers House Museum commemorates their scientific achievements; the house was once the brothers’ family home. The museum has around 2,000 exhibits. Its exhibition is divided into a scientific section and a memorial section. The museum thus offers a different historical focus from Kecharis: here, the brothers, their scientific achievements and their former family home take center stage, while Kecharis represents the religious and cultural history of medieval Armenia. Together, the two sites offer different ways to explore Tsaghkadzor’s cultural history.
Cable car, views and seasons
The Tsaghkadzor cable car offers bird’s-eye and panoramic views of the landscape. The ride to the Teghenis heights takes 40 minutes. The system has five stations; the fifth was put into operation specifically for tourists. The cable car operates year-round; check the current operating hours before your ride. You can factor the journey time into your day’s plans, while the panoramic views reveal the landscape from a different perspective.
Tsaghkadzor is known as a winter sports destination, with skiing, modern chairlifts, snow-covered forests and après-ski cafés. For the warmer months, the Tsaghkadzor municipality highlights hikes through wildflower-filled landscapes, as well as climbing and cycling. The seasonal highlights therefore differ: the winter profile is complemented by warm-weather activities in the wider municipality.
More activities
The Tsakhkadzor Sports Center has an indoor Olympic-size swimming pool and saunas. There are also indoor and outdoor tennis courts. Tennis visitors can therefore choose between an indoor court and an outdoor one; the pool and sauna offer different activities. The Tsaghkadzor Zip Line reaches heights of up to 130 meters. Together with the cable car and winter sports, it adds more options for activity and views.
