The columnar formation known as the Basalt Organ lies on the right bank of the Asat River Canyon, about 900 metres southeast of the Garni archaeological complex. The canyon, riverbank and columnar formation give this place a distinct geological character. At the same time, its precise location offers a concrete starting point for exploring Kotayk’s landscape.

Basalt and protected landscapes

The Arzakan-Meghradzor protected area safeguards rare forest wildlife, including red deer, brown bears and Caucasian grouse. The Hankavan hydrological protected area focuses on another aspect of nature: it protects the catchment areas of mineral springs. Near the summit of Mount Gutanasar, an extinct volcano, layers of black, solidified lava are exposed. These places represent different aspects of nature, from protected habitats to visible geological formations.

History and culture in Garni and Meghradzor

The Garni Temple was built in 77 AD, in the eleventh year of King Tiridates I’s reign. It is the region’s only restored temple and combines Armenian heritage with classical architectural elements. Its construction history and architecture offer two distinct ways of engaging with the site: the specific date of its construction and the fusion of different cultural design traditions.

Meghradzor also brings historical and contemporary cultural themes together. The 12th-century Tezharuyk Monastery lies in the hills above the village, about a ten-minute walk away. Artists have decorated the building façades in Meghradzor with colourful, thought-provoking murals. At the cultural centre, visitors can learn about traditional puppet making and puppetry.

Vare Varenk holds monthly dance festivals in the village, where visitors can learn Armenian dances with local residents. As no specific event dates are provided, it is best to check before your trip. This lets you plan a festival visit, while the monastery, murals and puppet culture each showcase different facets of Meghradzor’s cultural life.

Hiking and activities in different seasons

Meghradzor has marked trails, including the Meghradzor Trail and the Khachats Trail. They are suitable for beginner and experienced hikers; check local conditions before setting out. Another trail leads from the ancient Garni Temple to the Symphony of Stones and then follows the Asat to the Asat Reservoir. The described route thus links an ancient structure, a natural monument and the course of the river.

Those interested in winter sports will find twelve ski runs of varying difficulty at the Tsaghkadzor ski resort. The five-station ski lift climbs 1,137 metres up the slope of Mount Teghenis. Check which facilities are currently operating before your trip. Visitors can also ride a zipline over Tsaghkadzor and the surrounding forest. The marked hiking trails, ski runs and zipline offer different activities and settings; these differences can help you choose experiences that suit your trip.

Mineral water and baths in Hankavan

In Hankavan, mineral water is piped into private, covered baths with open roofs. The baths can be reserved for an hour with friends; check availability locally. This option adds a wellness experience to the landscape and cultural activities, without requiring you to choose the other destinations as part of a single set itinerary.
