Ruta Provincial 307 passes through the Yungas rainforest into the valley and is the main access route to Tafí del Valle. Its scenic route has more than 1,200 curves and bends; San Miguel de Tucumán is 107 kilometers away. For planning, these details provide a concrete framework for the journey without specifying a particular travel time.

Culture, Museums and Crafts

At the Museo Jesuítico de La Banda, a sensory, immersive visit takes you back to the past of Tafí del Valle and into the life of a traditional family on a Jesuit estancia. Jesuit estancias are among the town's most noteworthy cultural and historical sites. The Museo Casa Duende focuses on different themes: the myths and legends of the Indigenous peoples who inhabited the region, as well as esotericism and mysticism.

The Ruta del Artesano also combines crafts with an insight into traditional techniques. This self-guided route takes you through workshops where weaving with natural dyes and working with stone and clay are demonstrated. Along the route, you can also meet craftspeople who work with stone, leather, ceramics and wool. This lets you shape your visit around your interest in different materials and craft techniques.

Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

At El Pelao, there are two moderately challenging hiking trails to choose from: one is 5 kilometers long and takes 2 hours, while the other is 9 kilometers long and is listed as taking 3 hours. They therefore differ in both duration and distance. The La Ciénaga trail starts and ends at Avenida de los Franciscanos. La Ciénaga is also a mountain settlement at over 2,700 meters, suited to trekking as well as rural and archaeological tourism.

The Mirador del Cristo de La Quebradita is at over 2,000 meters and offers views of Tafí del Valle and its surroundings. The distinctive monument there was built in 1962. Another viewpoint nearby is Abra del Infiernillo, on Ruta 307, which connects Tafí del Valle and Amaicha del Valle. These spots add destinations and viewpoints of their own to the hiking trails, but need not be considered part of a single route.

Festivals and Regional Cuisine

The Fiesta Provincial de la Chuscha takes place every January at Complejo Democracia in Tafí del Valle. The program includes gaucho parades, doma (traditional horse-taming), offerings to Mother Earth, typical dishes and artistic performances. The Fiesta Nacional del Queso is celebrated every February and includes gaucho skills, competitions and live music. If you would like to plan your stay around one of the festivals, check the specific dates before planning your trip.

Tafí del Valle offers several options for regional dishes. Regional cuisine menus include empanadas, tamal, humita, locro and asado, among other dishes. Culture, crafts, outdoor activities and food offer different ways to shape a stay; the two festivals also add set dates in January and February.

In the Tafí Del Valle Department

The Ciudad Sagrada de Quilmes is located in the wider travel destination of the Tafí Del Valle Department. The Ciudad Sagrada de Quilmes was restored in the 1970s. Visitors can see reconstructed residential areas, agricultural terraces, a hilltop fortress and side defensive walls. Next to the archaeological site is the Centro de Interpretación de Quilmes. Its four educational rooms use visual, auditory and tactile elements to convey the Quilmes people's origins, daily life, customs and displacement.

In the Tafí Del Valle Department, the Museo Arqueológico a Cielo Abierto Los Menhires in El Mollar displays about 124 worked, elongated stones. They are up to three meters high and more than 2,000 years old. The Parque Provincial Los Ñuñorcos and the Reserva Natural Quebrada del Portugués are also part of the area's natural and historical context. The hills Ñuñorco Grande and Ñuñorco Chico were part of the old Inca road; archaeological sites are located there. The Reserva Quebrada del Portugués was established in 1996 to preserve the area's natural and cultural heritage.
