On July 9, 1816, the Declaration of Independence of the United Provinces of South America was signed at the Casa Histórica de Tucumán. The colonial house stands in the center of San Miguel de Tucumán, the provincial capital. This makes the Casa Histórica a fitting place to begin exploring Tucumán, where the country’s history becomes tangible.

Landscapes between the Yungas and the Andes

Parque Nacional Aconquija protects Argentina’s southernmost remnant of the Yungas, as well as high-altitude Andean landscapes. These two environments give the national park distinct natural characteristics. Another destination for nature lovers is Parque Provincial Cumbres Calchaquíes: it covers 8,000 hectares and reaches peaks of more than 3,000 meters. Various excursions start from bases in Tafí and Amaicha del Valle.

Hiking routes vary in difficulty and duration. The trail to Laguna del Tesoro in Parque Nacional Aconquija is rated moderate to challenging. The 12-kilometer route takes about six hours one way—a considerable time commitment to bear in mind when planning. Another trekking route leads to Cascada Los Alisos: it climbs to 3,300 meters above sea level and ends at a 60-meter-high waterfall. The two destinations differ both in trail length and duration and in their respective endpoints.

On the water and in the air

There are also discoveries to be made around the water. Dique La Angostura in El Mollar is suitable for water sports such as kayaking and kitesurfing. The Cascadas de El Remate can be reached from Dique Los Zazos. The two dams offer different activities: Dique La Angostura is a place for water sports, while Dique Los Zazos serves as a starting point for visiting waterfalls.

Paragliding from Loma Bola in San Javier offers another perspective on the Tucumán region and is one of the activities available. Whether you are interested in a challenging hike, water sports, or a flight, each of these destinations gives you a specific reason to experience Tucumán’s landscapes in a different way.

History and culture in San Miguel de Tucumán

The Casa Histórica brings together its central location in the provincial capital and the historic event of July 9, 1816. San Miguel de Tucumán also offers other ways to explore its culture. The Museo de la Industria Azucarera – Casa Obispo Colombres displays various machines from the history of sugar production. At the Museo Mercedes Sosa Casa Natal, visitors can explore the artist’s career through sound installations and interactive presentations.

These are different ways to discover the city: national history in a colonial house, the history of sugar production through machinery, and an artist’s career presented interactively. You can plan your visits around the subjects that interest you most.

Wine, markets, and regional specialties

Currently, 11 wineries on Tucumán’s Ruta del Vino de altura offer tourism services. Bodega Comunitaria Los Amaichas offers a distinctive community perspective: it is managed by the Indigenous community of Amaicha del Valle and is Latin America’s first community winery.

The Feria de Simoca also brings together regional products and crafts. Alongside cheese, cured meats, textile crafts, and saddlery, it offers traditional dishes: humita, tamal, pastel de novia, and quince empanadillas. The Feria is considered Tucumán’s oldest and most traditional market. Together, wineries, community winemaking, and a market featuring food and crafts reflect different aspects of regional life.
