El Trapiche lies in the hills of the Sierras of San Luis, above a valley crossed by a river. From the city of San Luis, El Trapiche can be reached via Provincial Route 9; the town is about 40 km north of the provincial capital.
Natural attractions around El Trapiche
Siete Cajones is three kilometers from El Trapiche. There, the river forms seven deep natural pools surrounded by a mountain landscape. The site offers a close-up view of the river landscape against the backdrop of the Sierras.
Near El Trapiche, Reserva FlorofaunĂstica La Florida has a well-marked circular trail about 4 km long. The paved route is considered easy to travel and connects enclosures for axis deer, gray foxes, antelope, iguanas, golden agoutis, maras, partridges and pumas. It also passes through espinillo woodlands and the central area. Siete Cajones is known for its natural river pools; at La Florida, the circular trail, wooded sections and enclosures shape the nature experience. The two destinations can thus be distinguished by their different features.
History and cultural heritage
El Trapiche was founded toward the end of the 18th century. According to local legend, the first mill was established here—also called a trapiche—to grind gold extracted from the La Carolina mine. This story inspired the name of the town.
Pircas, also called “pilcas,” are dry-stacked stone walls built without mortar. They are part of the archaeological and cultural heritage of the Central Sierras of San Luis, were used by Indigenous tribes centuries ago, and have been passed down through local tradition. Pircas can be found in El Trapiche, among other places.
In the surrounding area, the morteros of the RĂo Trapiche are also part of the pre-Columbian archaeological heritage. They attest to the presence of Indigenous peoples in the region. Together with the pircas, they add a cultural and archaeological dimension to the town’s history.
