Campo Quijano, also known as “Portal de los Andes,” is considered a convenient gateway to the Puna. When planning your trip, local activities set the pace: weekly markets, railway history, and cultural sites offer different highlights from trekking and mountain biking routes. You can tailor your stay around market times, local history, or a particular activity.

Weekly Markets Between the Plaza and the Train Station

A craft and entrepreneurs’ fair is held at Plaza Martín Fierro on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The plaza is at Calle 25 de Mayo 400, between Alberdi and Buenos Aires. The offerings include regional products, handicrafts, clothing, and local goods.

Another handicrafts market takes place at the train station on Saturdays from 7:00 a.m.; breakfast options are also available there. On Saturdays, the market at the station starts earlier, while the plaza fair also takes place on Sundays. Market hours may change; check the times before your visit.

Railway History and Places in the Townscape

The Museo del Tren preserves Campo Quijano’s railway history. It has a room with objects and graphics about the history of the construction of the Huaytiquina. Within the wider destination of Rosario De Lerma Department, Campo Quijano is also the first stop on the descent during the Tren a las Nubes excursion; a historical introduction to the C-14 railway line is part of the visit.

The train station and the viaduct are also places to find local handicrafts: visitors are welcomed by craftspeople at both sites. Places worth seeing in Campo Quijano include Iglesia Santiago ApĂłstol. Plaza MartĂn Fierro and Paseo Huaytiquina are also among the places that make a stay enjoyable.

Circuit, Trekking, and Mountain Biking

Campo Quijano is part of the Camino del Milagro, a circuit that connects faith, tradition, and culture and is linked to the city of Salta. The circuit brings these themes together in a cultural context, offering a different way to experience the area than the individual trekking and mountain biking activities described here.

An August 2026 municipal report describes a completed trekking event: participants set off from the center of Campo Quijano in the direction of Río Blanco. The 12-kilometer route followed the river landscape as far as Bosque de Arrayanes. A shorter, also completed session of “Senderismo Peque” covered about 4 kilometers through the railway area in the direction of Río Blanco.

Within the wider destination of Rosario De Lerma Department, the MTB Quebrada del Toro mountain biking course passes through natural landscapes within the Quebrada del Toro and is intended for people with some experience in cycling tourism. The surrounding region also has the Quebrada del Toro mountain biking route, which runs through the Quebrada del Toro, also traversed by the well-known Tren a las Nubes.

Anniversary and Local Life

Campo Quijano’s anniversary is celebrated every year on July 9. The town anniversary includes a traditional parade featuring local institutions. If you are planning a visit for the occasion, the fixed date can help you choose when to travel.

The plaza, train station, viaduct, and Museo del Tren offer different insights into Campo Quijano, from weekly markets and handicrafts to railway history. Together with the Camino del Milagro and the routes described here, they provide a selection of cultural and active pursuits that you can tailor to the focus of your stay.
