From Campo Quijano to Puerta Tastil, the Quebrada del Toro stretches across Rosario de Lerma Department. Archaeological remains, rural routes and festivals add to the landscape. When choosing where to stay, first consider the focus of your trip: history, outdoor activities or a particular event date.

Landscape and routes

Cerro Negro lies in the Serranías of Rosario de Lerma, which border Cachi Department. La Silleta also has its own distinctive landscape: a Yungas ecosystem defines the area, particularly around Potrero de Linares and Potrero de Uriburu.

The rural roads from Carabajal to El Corralito are suitable for trekking. Another way to explore the area is on horseback or by mule from Rosario de Lerma: these routes follow old muleteer trails through Corralito and El Manzano to Cerro Negro. The MTB Quebrada del Toro mountain biking route passes through the natural landscapes of the Quebrada, which is also crossed by the famous Tren a las Nubes. This offers a choice of different ways to explore, on foot, horseback or mule, as well as by bike.

Tastil and cultural heritage

The pre-Hispanic village of Santa Rosa de Tastil is a national historic monument in Rosario de Lerma Department. The Tastil archaeological site is part of the Qhapaq Ñan, which is listed as a World Heritage Site. A visit to the village therefore combines an archaeological focus with a cultural heritage site of broader significance.

The El Alfarcito complex also focuses on life in the mountains: it includes an arts and crafts center and an interpretation center on the subject. In Rosario de Lerma, cultural stops include the Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario, with its significant artistic heritage and religious images, as well as the Cementerio Histórico. The cemetery has a self-guided tour. Río Blanco is also home to a neo-Gothic chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Rosario.

If you include Campo Quijano, you can visit Plaza Martín Fierro there. Each stop offers something different: Tastil represents archaeological heritage, while the church, chapel, cemetery and plaza provide further cultural sites to explore.

Festivals throughout the year

Several events offer a specific reason to plan your travel dates around the calendar. “Rosario le Canta a la Patria” takes place every year on the eve of May 25. The Corso de Rosario de Lerma is a summer event featuring comparsas, murgas, floats and costumes. In summer, the Carpas of Rosario de Lerma also host carnival dances for locals and tourists.

Other events take place throughout the year: the Fiesta de la Papa Andina is held in the second week of July in the hamlet of El Alfarcito; the Fiesta del Choclo Capia is celebrated in March in the hamlet of Gobernador Manuel Sola. In November, the Fiesta Provincial de la Tradición includes, among other events, a dance of the Pericón Nacional. In Campo Quijano, the anniversary of the town is celebrated every year on July 9 with a traditional parade. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for your chosen year before booking your stay.

Rosario de Lerma and the wider destination of Salta

Across the wider destination of Salta, the province’s landscapes range from the arid Puna Desert to lush green jungle. The Tren a las Nubes reaches an altitude of 4,220 meters above sea level in the Puna region of Salta. Its route climbs from San Antonio de los Cobres to the Viaducto La Polvorilla. This provincial perspective complements the distinct view of Rosario de Lerma, with the Quebrada del Toro, Tastil and the festival traditions described above.

This lets you take into account the places and dates that matter for your trip when making your choice.
