Cachí offers several ways to incorporate culture and scenery into your travel plans. The colonial church and archaeological museum provide different historical perspectives; from here, you can also explore the Ruta del Vino de Altura. Hiking options include destinations nearby as well as opportunities to go with local guides around the town. This lets you decide in advance whether architecture and history, winegrowing or outdoor activities should be the focus.

Church and museum: two historical perspectives

The colonial church of Cachí is recognized as an Argentine National Historic Monument and was built in the 16th century. Its roofs are made of Cardón wood—a distinctive feature of the building’s architecture. Visitors interested in the town’s cultural heritage can make the church a focus of their trip.

Another perspective can be found at the Museo Arqueológico de Cachi «Pío Pablo Díaz». It was founded in 1969 on the basis of archaeological collections donated by Pío Pablo Díaz. The archaeological material comes from the northern part of the Valle Calchaquí and is particularly representative for interpreting pre-Hispanic history. The museum’s archaeological heritage reflects around 10,000 years of the Valle Calchaquí’s pre-Hispanic history.

The church and museum thus offer different perspectives: the church is associated with colonial architecture and its status as a historic monument, while the museum focuses on the long pre-Hispanic history of the Valle Calchaquí. Together, these subjects provide a guide for anyone looking to give their trip a cultural focus.

High-altitude winegrowing and hiking

The Ruta del Vino de Altura can be explored from Cachí. On this route, grape varieties are grown at elevations of more than 2,200 meters above sea level. High-altitude winegrowing is a distinct focus alongside the town’s cultural attractions. Those who include both in their travel plans can explore different interests in history and winegrowing without combining them into a single outing.

There are also several hiking options. The Parque Nacional Los Cardones is near the destination and offers opportunities for hiking. Hikes around the town with local guides are also possible. This gives you two distinct options in terms of location: a nearby national park and hikes around Cachí, where local guides may be available.

A distinct regional perspective on Departamento Cachi

Beyond the town itself, Departamento Cachi offers further archaeological sites. Potrero de Payogasta has been part of the Camino Ancestral Andino Qhapaq Ñan project since 2008. The complex is divided into several areas: Casa del Curaca is in the south. In the center are a ceremonial plaza with an Ushnu, or altar, restored in 2011, and two large, round Kollkas, or silos. A Kallanka, a rectangular hall with an 8 m-high gable, is in the north. These details give the regional archaeological site a clearly defined physical layout.

Las Pailas is also in Departamento Cachi. The archaeological site is considered one of the most important agricultural sites in the northern Valle Calchaquí and covers around 500 hectares of farmland. It includes fields cultivated in pre-Hispanic times and a residential area where workers lived and processed the fields’ produce. Potrero de Payogasta and Las Pailas thus broaden the view of Departamento Cachi; they are regional attractions, not features of the town of Cachí itself.

This gives you a clear way to choose a focus: the church and museum offer perspectives on different historical periods, the wine route focuses on high-altitude winegrowing, and the hiking options are either nearby or around the town. The archaeological sites in Departamento Cachi add a regional perspective.
