Playas Doradas combines beaches and water sports, while in Las Grutas a stretch of coastline is part of the Bahía de San Antonio marine protected area. These different highlights give you a practical starting point for planning your trip to San Antonio Department: first consider whether beaches, wildlife watching, sports or local history should be your main focus.

Beaches and Coastal Towns

Playas Doradas has a three-kilometer-long beach with fine sand and a gentle slope. The sand was formed by the breakdown of quartz and silicon dioxide and is considered unique in the country. Activities include kitesurfing, sandboarding, diving and fishing. Timing can also be important for planning: the Fiesta Nacional de Playas Doradas takes place every year around mid-February. Check the exact dates before your trip.

In Las Grutas, the coast of the Gulf of San Matías is part of the Área Natural Protegida Bahía de San Antonio protected area. Another nearby destination is Punta Perdices, known for its crystal-clear water and also called the “Caribbean of Patagonia.” Conditions for accessing the beach may vary; check the current situation before visiting. Salinas del Gualicho is about 50 kilometers from Las Grutas and is offered as an excursion destination for visitors to Las Grutas and San Antonio Oeste. A description dated September 27, 2024, mentions regular excursions by several operators. Check current offers and dates before your trip.

Marine Protected Area and Wildlife Watching

Bahía de San Antonio is a marine and coastal protected area at the northwestern end of the Gulf of San Matías. Since August 1993, it has been part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. The area is used by 17 species of migratory shorebirds; nine other species breed and reproduce in the Arctic Circle. The wildlife of Bahía also includes dolphins and sea lions.

Boat trips to observe marine wildlife operate year-round. The whale-watching season runs from mid-August to October; during excursions, visitors may see seabirds, sea lions and dolphins, as well as orcas on occasion. This creates a clear distinction when choosing when to travel: excursions are available all year, while whale watching is limited to a seasonal window. Check the dates of available tours before your trip.

Water Sports, History and Coastal Cuisine

San Antonio Oeste offers windsurfing, canoeing, water skiing and freediving. Alongside these water-based activities, the Museo Jacobacci offers an insight into the town’s history: it is housed in the historic home where engineer Guido Jacobacci lived and is home to a natural science and anthropology museum of the Patagonian coast. Its halls are said to house exhibitions on geology, paleontology, marine biology, archaeology and local ethnography.

San Antonio Este also has its own coastal character: a distinctive shell beach stretches along a dune base, and its beaches are known as “white beaches.” Fish and seafood are among the typical dishes served in the coastal restaurants of Las Grutas, San Antonio Oeste and San Antonio Este. Alongside outdoor activities, visitors can therefore choose to explore a museum or regional food culture, depending on their interests.
