Puerto Blest lies at the western end of the Brazo Blest arm of Lago Nahuel Huapi. Lush Valdivian rainforest, forested mountains, and crystal-clear waterways define the area. When planning, it is especially helpful to distinguish between the different options: a trail through the forest, a walking loop around the bay, or an optional bus-and-boat connection to Lago Frías.
Rainforest, Waterfall, and Lake
Puerto Blest is a starting point for visiting Cascada de los Cántaros. A stepped trail leads through the Valdivian rainforest to the waterfall. An Alerce tree more than 1,500 years old can be seen on the trail to Cascada. Lago Frías is also nearby. Its milky-green color comes from sediment from the glaciers of Cerro Tronador. The natural highlights therefore differ: the trail to Cascada focuses on forest and steps, while Lago Frías stands out for its distinctive water color.
Trails and Excursion Options
You can walk around the bay to Puerto Blest in approximately one hour. Another route, Puerto Blest–Puerto Alegre, is listed as a six-kilometer round trip on a road suitable for vehicles, with a moderate difficulty level. The two routes are described differently: the bay walk has an approximate walking time, while the Puerto Alegre route has a distance, route type, and difficulty level. Check trail conditions in advance.
An optional boat trip to Lago Frías departs from Puerto Blest. The journey first covers three kilometers by bus to Puerto Alegre, then continues by boat across the lake. Unlike the walking routes, this trip combines a land leg with a boat crossing. Whether it is offered depends on the operator and conditions; check availability for your date in advance.
History of the Area
Puerto Blest is also linked to history: land donated by Francisco Pascasio Moreno in the area in 1903 became part of Parque Nacional del Sud in 1922, the first national park in Latin America. The donation and its later incorporation give the landscape a historical connection that is part of the area's character, alongside its rainforest, waterways, and trails.
Accommodation in Puerto Blest
The reopened Hotel Puerto Blest is located near the shore in the Puerto Blest area. The hotel has an à la carte restaurant and a cafeteria. If you are considering staying there, check the availability of accommodation and dining for your travel dates in advance.
The Wider Region: Departamento Bariloche
In the wider destination of Departamento Bariloche, Nahuel Huapi National Park offers a broader range of activities, including mountaineering, boat trips, hiking, camping, horseback riding, and rafting. Circuito Chico offers another regional perspective: Bariloche's traditional sightseeing route connects the city with forests, lakes, and mountains. From kilometer 30, it includes a turnoff to Villa Tacul on the bay of Llao Llao and continues toward Lago Escondido. These options complement Puerto Blest's focus on Brazo Blest, rainforest, and water destinations with distinct regional themes.
