La Lobería, also known as Punta Bermeja, is a seaside resort and town on the northern coast of the San Matías Gulf, at its entrance. Two distinctive features shape travel plans: at low tide, natural rock pools become visible, and the coast is part of the Punta Bermeja-La Lobería protected area. The pools offer adults and children a calm place to swim. If you are coming specifically for these bathing spots, plan your visit around low tide and check the tide levels.

Coastal Area and Protected Area

The Punta Bermeja “La Lobería” Nature Reserve extends across the beaches of La Lobería and protects Patagonia’s northernmost breeding colony of South American sea lions. The protected area was established in 1971 to protect this colony. It covers 1,900 hectares, including 870 hectares of land, and extends along 14 kilometers of coastline. These three figures describe different measures: the total area, the share that is land, and the length of the coastline. This makes it possible to understand the protected area both by its size and by the extent of its coastline.

Sea Lions, Coastal Birds and Nature Watching

The official route for observing marine wildlife leads to La Lobería. The Punta Bermeja Fauna Reserve has an interpretation center and a viewpoint on the edge of the cliffs, from which the beach and sea lion colony can be seen. From a viewpoint on the cliffs of Punta Bermeja, visitors can observe sea lions and coastal birds. Wildlife visibility naturally varies; the viewpoint offers views of the coast and its wildlife, but does not guarantee any particular sightings.

In the area around La Lobería, Punta Bermeja offers guided walks and educational trails. The availability of guided walks may vary; check in advance what is being offered during your visit. At the Fauna Interpretation Center, visitors can learn about the lives of mammals and see representative animal and plant species of the region. The center’s opening arrangements may also vary, so check them before visiting. Walks and educational trails complement wildlife watching with a way to explore the surrounding area on foot.

Getting There and Accommodation

Access to La Lobería is via Provincial Route No. 1, which is fully paved. However, after strong winds or rain, sandbanks can block access. So the fact that the road is paved does not mean it is passable all the way in all weather conditions. Check access conditions before your trip. There is also a bus service from Viedma to La Lobería; schedules and availability may change. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current connections before departure.

The 210-kilometer-long Camino de la Costa runs along Provincial Route No. 1 and includes Balneario La Lobería and the Punta Bermeja Protected Natural Area. In the wider destination of Adolfo Alsina Department, the coastal route connects Viedma with Puerto San Antonio Este and passes through the seaside resorts of El Cóndor, La Lobería, La Ensenada, Bahía Creek and Punta Mejillón. These details describe two different scales: La Lobería as a specific destination and the longer stretch of coast of which the town is a part.

Balneario La Lobería has a campground with fire pits, shelters and barbecue facilities. If you are considering camping as an accommodation option, check the condition of the facilities and whether the amenities are usable before your trip, as campground facilities may change.
