Adolfo Alsina Department can be explored through two distinct focal points: the coastal towns along the Camino de la Costa and Viedma’s urban history. The route connects Viedma with Puerto San Antonio Este and follows the Atlantic coast via El Cóndor, La Lobería, La Ensenada, Bahía Creek and Punta Mejillón. If you are looking for hotels, you can first decide whether the coast and nature or Viedma’s historic sites should shape your stay. Check local road conditions before setting out.

Coastal Route and Beaches

At low tide, natural rock pools appear in La LoberĂa, where adults and children can swim. El CĂłndor is known for its wide, calm beaches, high cliffs and rich biodiversity. BahĂa Creek, meanwhile, lies on the northern coast of the Golfo San MatĂas: there, cliffs give way to a bay lined with low dunes, with clear water and wide sandy beaches. These places offer different coastal landscapes that you can take into account when planning your trip.

The Camino de la Costa also offers natural conditions for sand yachting, kitesurfing, windsurfing, paragliding and kite buggying throughout the year. These activities are associated with El CĂłndor and the route. If you choose your accommodation based on a particular coastal town, check the location of the specific property and plan your drives with local road conditions in mind.

Nature and Seasonal Wildlife

The Punta Bermeja protected area is located near the destination. A permanent colony of South American sea lions is reported to number more than 5,000 animals and is described as the largest in northern Patagonia; the population may change. The area is also home to numerous bird species from the Monte and the coast, including southern giant petrels, cormorants and gulls. Each summer, many sea lion pups are born there.

Whales and Commerson’s dolphins are particularly common off the coast of Bahía Creek between July and September. The season therefore offers a different wildlife experience from the summer months in Punta Bermeja. Nearby, the Colonia de Loros Barranqueros is also considered the world’s largest burrowing parrot colony; its nests are caves in the cliffs. These seasonal and landscape differences can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Viedma and Historic Sites

Viedma was founded on April 22, 1779, by Francisco de Viedma y Narváez. In the heart of the city, the Manzana Histórica preserves buildings that form part of its historical and cultural heritage. The Puente Ferrocarretero crosses the Río Negro and connects Carmen de Patagones in Buenos Aires Province with Viedma in Río Negro Province. These places offer a different perspective on the region from its coastal landscape.

Plaza Alsina is Viedma’s oldest square and was declared a National Historic Site in November 1986. Plants from different parts of the world grow there and are considered exotic in Patagonia’s climate. The Museo Salesiano “Cardenal Cagliero” focuses on the Salesians’ religious, educational, health and cultural activities throughout history. In El Cóndor, the Primer Faro de la Patagonia has been in operation since 1887. Guardia Mitre offers another historic landmark: its founding date is considered to be December 16, 1862; parts of the old settlement remain and now form the historic town center.

Activities and Time of Year

There are different ways to experience the RĂo Negro: between Viedma and Carmen de Patagones, you can explore the river on sightseeing boats or rowing excursions. During the first leg in January, the annual Regata del RĂo Negro connects places such as Guardia Mitre and Viedma. It covers 300 kilometers and lasts seven days.

The Fiesta del Mar y el Acampante also provides a seasonal highlight: it takes place every January in El CĂłndor and features sports and cultural activities, as well as free music performances by national-level artists.
