Wine tastings on Tupungato’s streets, trails through foothill landscapes and a mountain range with snow-capped peaks shape the discoveries awaiting you at this destination. At more than 6,500 meters high, Tupungato Volcano is one of the highest peaks in the Americas and gives the department its distinctive landscape. The vineyards are also at high elevations: more than 1,200 meters above sea level.

Wine, Tours and Regional Cuisine

The urban Tour de Vinos takes visitors along Tupungato’s central streets. The tour includes wine tastings and wine pairings, and also introduces several cultural heritage sites in the Ciudad district. In this way, the wine theme is combined with a look at places within the urban fabric.

Wines from vineyards located more than 1,200 meters above sea level are considered unique, intense and elegant, and also stand out worldwide. At Masi Tupungato, visitors can choose between a winery tour with a tasting of three wines or a wine tasting paired with several kinds of cheese. The winery is in the La Arboleda district. In Gualtallary, Bodega Sophenia offers guided winery tours with different tasting options.

For those who want to do more than taste and would like to cook themselves, Sabores de Tupungato offers an interactive live-cooking experience: guided by a local chef, participants prepare their own five-course regional menu using locally produced ingredients. Tour de Vinos dates and availability vary; the live-cooking schedule is also subject to change. Check the current dates in advance.

Mountain Scenery and Routes into the Valley

The La Carrera–San José–El Peral Circuit follows the Camino de los Cerrillos. Take Provincial Route 86 to reach Tupungato and enjoy views across the valley at the foot of the mountain range, whose peaks are snow-capped year-round. The Camino de la Carrera is another scenic route, accessed via Provincial Route 89.

Provincial Route 89 is also another access route to Tupungato and connects the town with Potrerillos, Las Vegas and El Salto in Luján de Cuyo Department. The route passes through foothill landscapes with impressive estancias and cultivated land. In the Gualtallary area, Provincial Route 99 runs eastward, connecting the area with National Route 40.

For a hike, Senderismo de Montaña is a moderately challenging route leading to the confluence of the Las Tunas and Santa Clara rivers at an elevation of 2,250 meters. The Camino de los Cerrillos can also be experienced on full-moon nights via Provincial Route 86; check locally for dates. Explore Tupungato’s scenic routes by car, on foot or by bicycle and enjoy different perspectives of the valley.

Pilgrimage, Museum and Starry Skies

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus began at the Capilla Sagrado Corazón de Jesús around 1905. Since then, the chapel has been a center of pilgrimage and prayer for many believers and devotees. The Museo del RIM 11 Grl. Las Heras “Subof. P. Domingo Escárate” features objects, photographs and historical documents, as well as exhibits on the development of the weapons and uniforms of the RIM 11 “Tnte. Grl. Gregorio de Las Heras” Mountain Infantry Regiment.

The sky is another possible focus of discovery: astrotourism in Tupungato is aimed at the general public as well as astronomers, amateurs and photographers. In the El Peral district, a campground offers the opportunity to camp and enjoy nature. Alongside wine and mountain trails, visitors can therefore choose from stargazing, prayer and military history as different areas of interest for their trip.
