Gaviotas is a rural paraje on Ruta Nacional 22, at the intersection with Ruta Provincial 1. Its railway history gives the place a clear historical focus: it extends from the former station to a railway corridor that ran far beyond the town. Those interested in railway history can view Gaviotas as a specific stop within a broader regional story.

The former station as a visible trace

Almost everything from the former Gaviotas station was demolished; a travel report from May 2023 identifies the large water tank as the only visibly preserved part. The contrast between the extensive demolition and this single structure makes the station complex’s transformation tangible. This description of its condition refers to May 2023. If you plan to see the tank during a visit, check the current situation on site beforehand.

Gaviotas was also included in a photographic tour of several railway stations in La Pampa Province. The tour was part of a temporary exhibition that has since ended; its theme placed the town within a broader landscape of railway stations. At the time, this brought two different perspectives together: the physical trace at the former station and a photographic look at several stops.

A station within a wider railway network

The historic railway corridor from Bahía Blanca to the confluence of the Río Limay and Río Neuquén crossed a small part of the La Pampa region, where the Gaviotas and Anzoátegui stations were built. In 1897, five station names were proposed for the route to Río Colorado: Médanos, Algarrobo, Gaviotas, Río Colorado, and Cuatreros. Gaviotas appears here as one of the names proposed for the route.

Another historical reference is the Bahía Blanca–Río Colorado railway line: it opened to public traffic on September 13, 1897, and was authorized to carry passengers and freight. The proposed names and the line’s opening shed light on different aspects of railway history: the planning of station names at the time and the authorization of the line for public traffic. Together, they place the Gaviotas station within a broader historical connection.

Regional context: salt flats and Pichi Mahuida Reserve

The wider travel area includes the Salinas de Anzoátegui and Salitral Negro in La Adela. Visits to these salt-flat destinations are on foot and only with authorized guides. Check access arrangements before traveling. The guided-tour requirement is an important difference from Gaviotas’ railway history: here, the focus is on regulated visits to the salt-flat destinations, not another railway site.

Another regional point of interest is the Pichi Mahuida Provincial Reserve. It was established in 1996 under Provincial Law No. 1,689 and is located in the southwest of La Pampa Province, on the RĂo Colorado, along Ruta Provincial 34 and near the riverside towns of La Adela and Gobernador Duval. A description dated September 4, 2020, mentions a public-use area, an interpretation center, and walking trails. Before visiting, check current access and the condition of the facilities mentioned.

For planning your trip, you can compare these different interests: Gaviotas represents station and railway-line history, the salt flats offer guided walking visits, and the reserve provides a regional landscape connection. These topics offer different ways to explore the history and surroundings of the wider travel area.
