At El Salitral Encantado, you can hike through the salt flat’s wild landscape and follow the tracks of endangered species. In La Pampa, this nature experience sits alongside a literary collection in Toay, historic sites, and protected areas with different focuses. Regional cuisine is also part of the province’s travel experience.

Literary Heritage and Historic Traces

The Casa Museo Olga Orozco in Toay, in the province of La Pampa, is designated a National Historic Monument. Its collection includes the writer’s personal library, with 4,500 books and 500 magazines. Here, visitors can explore literary heritage through a collection of tangible works.

The ruins of an old estancia lie beside the Arroyo de las Sierras in Parque Nacional Lihué Calel. Cave paintings are hidden in a cave in the Sierras Malas. These traces are quite different from the collection in Toay: here, the cultural character of the national park is shaped by the remains of a former estancia and cave art.

Museo El Castillo is also located in a protected area: it is in Reserva Provincial Parque Luro and is designated a National Historic Monument of Argentina. A Mennonite colony lives in Guatraché, where residents remain attached to their traditions.

Protected Areas and Routes Through the Landscape

Reserva Provincial Parque Luro is a 7,600-hectare protected area. More than 160 bird species live there. Another protected landscape is Reserva Natural Pichi Mahuida, which protects ten kilometers of riverbank along the RĂo Colorado. La Pampa therefore offers both a large protected area and a stretch of protected riverbank.

Parque Nacional Lihué Calel offers a trekking loop through mountain valleys and forests of Caldén and Jarilla trees. If you would rather explore the landscape on a hike through a salt flat, El Salitral Encantado offers a different focus: you can follow the tracks of endangered species such as the mara, puma, guanaco, and land tortoise. These are the species whose tracks visitors can look for.

El Salitral Encantado is accessible via the Ruta del Desierto, also known as Ruta Provincial 20, and Ruta Provincial 23. Conditions at the site may vary seasonally, and road conditions can change. Check both before your visit.

Day Trips, Estancias, and Thermal Waters

Rural estancias scattered across the province offer visitors special day-trip experiences, with impressive sunrises and sunsets. Centro Termal Bernardo Larroudé adds thermal pools, a sauna, and massages to the options. Operating conditions and the availability of these services may change; check what is currently available before your visit.

Asado Criollo and the Ruta del Vino

In Argentina, asado is considered a cultural ritual. On the Pampa plain, asado criollo is a typical dish made with beef, lamb, or goat meat. The dish offers a tangible insight into regional cuisine without having to represent the entire province.

The Ruta del Vino also passes through La Pampa: the wine route in Patagonia runs through the provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, and La Pampa. It includes tours and guided visits, tastings, and lunches at regional restaurants. Offerings and dates may change; check in advance what is taking place when you travel.
