Valle Hermoso offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: a protected area with nature trails, cultural sites and an urban riverside swimming area. The Vaquerías Nature Reserve is located in the town of Valle Hermoso in the Department of Punilla and belongs to the National University of Córdoba (UNC). When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you want your stay to focus on nature, culture or a mix of both.

Nature and Hiking Trails

The Vaquerías Nature Reserve is a protected area with a Chaco Serrano ecosystem and covers approximately 400 hectares. The hiking trail to Cerro de la Cruz is of moderate difficulty and leads to a summit with views over the Punilla Valley. The route to Cascada de los Helechos is one of the most notable nature hikes and takes approximately one hour. For Cerro de la Cruz, difficulty and views are key points to consider; for the waterfall, it is the approximate duration.

Visitors can also take part in talks and workshops on interpreting local fauna and flora at the Nature Reserve. If these events are important to your plans, check the dates in advance.

Culture and Learning

Castillo Hotel Fabrega is a building from the early 20th century, a former estate and now an emblematic local landmark. The Chapel of San Antonio is one of Valle Hermoso’s cultural heritage gems. The museum and learning center offer two more ways to explore the area’s culture: the Capitán Juan de Zeballos Municipal Museum is dedicated to archaeology and paleontology. The interactive Paseo con Ciencia lets families learn about physics, astronomy and botany.

A Destination by the Water

Balneario Municipal Dique La Isla is an urban riverside swimming area in Valle Hermoso and adds a destination by the water to the nature and culture options. If a visit there is important to your plans, check its current condition in advance.

Punilla Department and Getting There

For broader trip planning in the Department of Punilla, it is worth taking a closer look at the region’s diversity. At 1,979 meters, Cerro Uritorco is the highest point in northern Punilla. Punilla has five major reservoirs where visitors can fish; sailing and motorized water sports are also possible there. Quebrada del Condorito National Park is located partly in the Department of Punilla. The V-shaped gorge is 800 meters high and 1,500 meters wide at its widest point; Andean condors can be spotted from its upper rims. The Camino de los Artesanos connects Villa Giardino and La Cumbre over nine kilometers.

Bus services to Valle Hermoso include Ersa, Lumasa, La Calera and Sarmiento. Check current services before you leave and plan your journey around the schedules available at the time.
