Villa San Nicolás lies in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Chica. The settlement extends across an old river valley that slopes gently from east to west and is framed by the foothills of the Sierra Chica and the Sierra de Ochoa. The valley and mountain foothills therefore define the town’s geographical setting.

River Valley and Road Location

Within the settlement, the old river valley forms the landscape setting; its gentle slope runs from east to west. The foothills of the Sierra Chica and the Sierra de Ochoa frame it, while its location in the eastern foothills specifies its position relative to the Sierra Chica. For choosing a destination with a distinct landscape profile, this combination of valley and mountain foothills is a notable point of reference. Ruta Nacional 20 adds a road connection: at Villa San Nicolás, it is at kilometer 731.

La Hostería: Planning and Former Use

La Hostería is a distinctive historical focal point. The project for La Hostería was planned and commissioned in 1950 by architects L. A. Roca and A. Meijide Lavignase, in the highest part of the Villa San Nicolás subdivision. La Hostería first opened its doors in the summer of 1959. Its guests included seasonal tourists and people from Córdoba who spent weekends there. The dates mark different stages: 1950 refers to the planning and commission, and the summer of 1959 to its first opening.

The complex included an Olympic-size swimming pool, 200 meters from the main building and equipped with a diving board. Six decorative lanterns lit the pool at night. Facilities included changing rooms and restrooms, as well as a small bar and a dance floor. In the surrounding area, horseback riding was among the activities enjoyed by La Hostería’s holiday guests at the time; local residents provided the horses.

These offer two distinct ways to shape your trip: the landscape gives the town a geographical context, while La Hostería offers a historical perspective on its planning, guests, and former leisure activities. You can choose to focus on either geography or cultural history.

Public Transport and Regional Setting

In 2024, passengers could use the public transport corridor between Malagueño and San Nicolás in both directions; the fare was $1,000. Check the timetable and fare again before traveling.

Within the wider travel destination of Departamento Santa María lies the Paravachasca tourist area, 30 kilometers southwest of the city of Córdoba. It is located between Valle de Punilla to the northwest and Valle de Calamuchita to the south. From Córdoba, Paravachasca can be reached via Provincial Route 5. Its location southwest of Córdoba and access via Provincial Route 5 answer different orientation questions: one gives the direction, the other the road route. Outdoor activities in Paravachasca include horseback riding, guided excursions, and hiking.
