Alta Gracia can be explored through several themes: the Jesuit Estancia, museums of local and cultural history, recurring festivals and walks along Arroyo Chicamtoltina. This gives you several ways to plan your visit: you can focus on cultural heritage or include nature and the waterside landscape, without losing sight of the city’s history.

Jesuit Heritage and Water Engineering

The Estancia Jesuítica de Alta Gracia is located in the historic center of Alta Gracia. It dates back to 1643 and is one of five Jesuit estancias in Córdoba that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Museo Nacional Estancia Jesuítica de Alta Gracia y Casa del Virrey Liniers is housed in the estancia’s residence. This brings together the history of the estancia and its use as a museum at one site.

Water engineering is also part of the site’s history. A tajamar near the estancia, designed by Juan Krauss, was supplied by irrigation ditches. Hydraulic power drove two grain mills and a fulling mill; the water was also used to irrigate fruit and vegetable gardens. These details show the system’s various functions: it supported both mill operations and garden irrigation.

El Tajamar was built by the Jesuits in 1659 and is considered the oldest artificial dam in Córdoba Province. The structure is also known as a meeting place for families and a spot for relaxation. This gives you two related points of interest: the estancia’s historic water engineering and the dam.

Museums and Cultural History

Villa Nydia was designated cultural heritage by the Alta Gracia municipal government and acquired in November 2000. It opened as the Museo Casa Ernesto Che Guevara on July 14, 2001. The Museo Casa del Che displays photographs of various homes where the Guevara De la Serna family lived during their time in Alta Gracia from 1932 to 1943. The focus is therefore on several stages of the family’s life in the city, not just a single location.

Other houses offer different cultural perspectives. The Museo Manuel de Falla is located in Chalet Los Espinillos, where Manuel de Falla spent the final phase of his life. La Peña was the home of Gabriel Dubois and his family from 1932; there, he established Alta Gracia’s first art workshop for sculpture. Together, these places offer different insights into the city’s cultural history.

The Museo Arqueológico Municipal displays materials from the period before the Spanish conquest in parts of the Sierras Centrales, as well as materials related to the first contacts between Spaniards and Indigenous peoples. Its collection tells the story of the Indigenous peoples of the surrounding area; education is a central aim of the museum. Those interested in the region’s history will find a different focus here than at museums devoted to individual houses and people.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The events calendar also offers a range of different highlights. Held in November, Mes Aniversario de Falla honors Manuel de Falla with concerts, theater, film screenings and other gatherings. The traditional food festival Peperina takes place during Holy Week and offers cooking classes for all age groups. If one of the festivals is a deciding factor in your trip, check the dates for that year’s edition.

Arroyo Chicamtoltina and the Landscape

Arroyo Chicamtoltina crosses Alta Gracia from northwest to southeast. Its clear, calm waters and surroundings of densely leafed trees that provide shade define the landscape. You can walk along its banks. This adds a nature-focused option to the city’s cultural and museum highlights, without requiring a particular route or walking time.

Which highlights you choose depends on what interests you most in Alta Gracia: the history of the estancia and its water engineering, the different perspectives offered by the museums, a cultural festival or the landscape along the arroyo. These themes give you a practical starting point for planning your stay.
