Railways and wooded landscapes give Aviá Teraí a distinctive historical and geographical setting. The town’s origins are linked to the settlement of railway workers and engineer Pedro Stom. A municipal water park and the route to the Parque Científico y Educativo “Campo del Cielo” are also among the topics to explore.

Railway History and Townscape

The settlement of railway workers and Pedro Stom, head of the State Railways’ railway squadron, is associated with the surveying and construction of the Barranqueras–Avia Terai railway line in 1912. Avia Terai is also considered a railway junction where branches towards Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe, and the Province of Salta converge.

A local report from 2009 places a calicanto structure one meter from the railway tracks and gives its capacity as 45,000 liters. If you want to include this structure specifically in your visit plans, confirm its current condition in advance. The same report dates Aviá Teraí’s first chalet to around 1927 and places it behind the tracks towards streets 6 and 8.

Quebracho and Wooded Landscape

Aviá Teraí’s wooded terrain is characterized mainly by red and white Quebracho. This landscape helped the town become known as “Fortín de las Maderas.”

A 2010 description places the Las Curiosas estate in Aviá Teraí in a landscape surrounded by 300 hectares of monte—shrubland and woodland. A report dated February 25, 2023, places the Las Curiosas country hotel in Aviá Teraí, in the larger Independencia Department, within a 200-hectare nature reserve in the Chaco forest. It also mentions a 36-hectare park with native flora and fauna on the property.

Water Park and Route to Campo del Cielo

Aviá Teraí’s municipal water park was inaugurated and opened on December 4, 2023. Its features include an 89-square-meter swimming pool, water play features, and landscaped outdoor areas. If the park is important to your plans, check the current opening hours before visiting.

From Aviá Teraí, the route to the Parque Científico y Educativo “Campo del Cielo” heads southwest along Ruta Nacional 89. If you plan to make the trip, check current road conditions.

Highlights for Your Stay

In the larger Independencia Department, Aviá Teraí’s broad, tree-lined streets invite you to take a walk around the town. This stroll offers a different focus from the municipal water park: one centers on the streetscape, the other on the swimming pool and water play features.
