On December 20, 1834, Juan Manuel de Rosas wrote a document at Estancia La Merced that became known as the Carta de la Hacienda de Figueroa. It was addressed to Facundo Quiroga. The estate, also called Posta de Figueroa, was designated a National Historic Monument on September 10, 2021. In San Andrés de Giles Partido, this place connects a specific document with the history of rural heritage.

An Estate Steeped in History

Hacienda de Figueroa is an example of early agricultural settlements and of the architecture that developed in the Buenos Aires region during the Hispanic period. The estancia thus offers two distinct historical perspectives: on the one hand, the creation of the Carta, with its well-known date, author and addressee, takes center stage. On the other, the hacienda points to the development of rural settlements and their architectural styles. Anyone interested in the history of the area will find both closely connected here.

Azcuénaga: Architecture and Rural Character

Azcuénaga is shaped by the tranquility of rural life, vibrant nature and local history; its cultural heritage is enhanced through community tourism. One distinctive architectural landmark is the Capilla Nuestra Señora del Rosario: the church was built in the Neo-Romanesque style and inaugurated in 1907. Its style and date give the building a specific historical context.

Other visitor attractions in Azcuénaga include the Estación de ferrocarril Azcuénaga, Panadería La Moderna, Club Recreativo Apolo and Plaza Miguel Azcuénaga. The bakery also helped organize the traditional Fiesta de la Galleta de Campo en Horno a Leña. Thus, the town’s history encompasses community life and local festivities alongside its church and railway station.

Festivals and Local Culture

The ninth Fiesta de la Galleta de Campo was scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 11 a.m. at the railway station grounds in Azcuénaga. Plans included sales of Galleta de Campo, artistic performances, a fair featuring artisans and entrepreneurs, a food area, and canteen service. The specific date and planned program apply to this edition; they do not constitute a general annual guarantee.

Another festival tradition is the Fiesta del Salame más largo de Argentina. The second edition was held at Parque Municipal; a first edition had already taken place the previous year. The festival featured artisans, producers, musicians, singers and dancers. The cantina was run by the Asociación de Bomberos Voluntarios. This combination of crafts, music, dance and food offers a different view of local cultural life from that of the historic architecture.

Roads and Getting Around the Partido

Ruta Nacional 7, Ruta Nacional 8 and Ruta Provincial 41 cross the area and provide ways to get around the partido. Ruta Nacional 7 connects Buenos Aires with Mendoza; Ruta Nacional 8 connects Buenos Aires with Córdoba and the north of the country. Ruta Provincial 41 connects Baradero with Ruta Nacional 2. These routes provide a wider regional context, while individual directions focus more specifically on Azcuénaga.

Ruta 193 starts at Ruta Nacional 7 near the entrance to the city of San Andrés de Giles, continues to Zárate, and passes through Azcuénaga and Solís. It is unpaved between the city of San Andrés de Giles and Ruta Nacional 8. To reach Azcuénaga, one option is to take Ruta Nacional 7 to the San Andrés de Giles exit, or travel via Carlos Keen and continue through Villa Ruiz along the old royal road; another option is Ruta Nacional 8 near Solís. This route includes an 800-meter unpaved section. Check current access conditions and the state of the unpaved road sections before setting out.
