The Laguna Salada Grande Natural Reserve is located in the Talares de Madariaga, on the shore of Laguna La Salada Grande. It is part of the La Salada wetland complex, a region of fields and lagoons covering around 600 km². The Provincial Natural Reserve preserves a section of the original landscape of the Pagos del Tuyú and protects the native Espinal. It is also an important setting for birdwatching and ecotourism. Here, landscape conservation and nature experiences come together: the lagoon does not stand alone, but is part of a vast landscape of wetlands, fields and other lagoons.

Talares and rural history

At Puesto La Invernada, the rural past becomes tangible: this historic site was an outpost of Estancia Juancho Viejo. The municipal property is home to the Sendero Talares de Lomada trail, along Ruta 74 at km 5.5. You can walk the trail accompanied by a park ranger, observing natural processes, history and the ecological role of each species. The guided walk connects the landscape with its origins and use.

At the same location, paid sulky rides and horseback rides are available Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Advance reservations are required; check current availability before you arrive. The trail, horseback ride and sulky ride offer different ways to experience the rural surroundings, while the Puesto itself recalls the former estancia.

Country roads and regional products

The Recorridos Rurales (Rural Routes) follow scenic country roads to various places in the Partido de General Madariaga. Destinations include shops, bars, railway stations and lagoons, and the routes offer a glimpse of rural culture. Rather than focusing solely on individual attractions, this perspective also brings attention to the places between the lagoons and settlements.

In the municipality, the Mercado de La Estación adds the region’s products to the picture. This market for visitors brings together more than 50 local entrepreneurs and producers. Their offerings include fruit, vegetables, prepared foods and handicrafts. Regional flavors and local work are represented side by side, and the market is not limited to any one type of product.

Lagoons and outdoor recreation

At Laguna Salada Grande, the Club de Pesca y Náutica General Madariaga offers fishing and water sports. The club is 19 km from General Juan Madariaga; its recreational area also has a campsite, barbecue areas and children’s play equipment. If you plan to make use of these facilities, check the current options and availability in advance.

The recreational area at Laguna La Larga is about 9 km from Madariaga’s main roundabout. It has barbecue areas, benches, tables, a beach area and two piers. A different, specific visitor rule applies at Laguna Los Horcones: combustion engines are not permitted there. These details can help you decide which bodies of water and activities you would like to explore, without confusing one place with another.

Museums and Gaucho traditions

The Museo Histórico del Tuyú preserves, researches and interprets the history and cultural heritage of General Madariaga. Its permanent exhibition covers the first settlers, the founding estancias, the arrival of the railway, immigrants, and the first shops and local institutions. A separate room displays objects donated by singer Argentino Luna. The exhibits trace the story from settlement through the changes brought by the railway to local cultural life.

The Museo Ferroviario Juancho preserves railway culture at the railway station that opened in 1908 and displays numerous objects used in railway operations. Another historical landmark is Puente San Jose De Herrera: the iron bridge was built in the 1910s and is considered an important part of the region’s cultural heritage. The two sites draw attention to different aspects of the past, from railway culture to architectural heritage.

General Madariaga presents itself as a “Pago Gaucho”; living Creole traditions and Gaucho culture find expression in activities and festivals. During Holy Week, the Passion according to John is staged in a city park, which also hosts the opening ceremony of the Fiesta Nacional del Gaucho. The Concurso de Asadores celebrates the Gaucho tradition of cooking beef on a cross-shaped spit. The Concurso de Asadores is generally held on the second weekend in October; the event is associated with the grounds of Puesto La Invernada on Ruta 74 at km 5.5 and celebrates the Gaucho tradition of cooking beef on a cross-shaped spit. Check current event dates before your trip.
