The Fiesta Nacional del Gaucho in December and Laguna Los Horcones nearby give a trip to General Juan Madariaga two distinct dimensions: culture and activities on the water. There is also art in town and natural attractions elsewhere in the wider destination. As you plan, consider which of these highlights matters most to you and choose your travel dates accordingly.

Culture: Gaucho traditions and regional art

The Fiesta Nacional del Gaucho has been held in General Juan Madariaga every December since 1972. It celebrates the traditions and customs of the Tuyú region. December is therefore a specific time to keep in mind if you are interested in the festival.

Taller Del Sol - Espacio De Arte offers a different cultural focus: it houses works by Wifredo Viladrich and other regional artists. Alongside the traditions of Tuyú, regional art can also be a distinct part of your travel plans. The festival and the art offer different ways to experience the destination’s culture; specific dates are especially relevant when planning around the Fiesta.

Lagoons and activities nearby

Laguna Los Horcones is in the Partido de General Madariaga, 15 kilometers from the city. Sport fishing is possible there year-round. The destination lists sailing and rowing among its water activities, including windsurfing, sailing in a sailboat, canoeing, boating, and kayaking. Combustion engines are not permitted at Laguna Los Horcones. This allows you to take both the available activities and the restriction into account when planning.

Nature in the wider General Juan Madariaga destination

The Reserva Natural Provincial Laguna Salada Grande is located in the wider General Juan Madariaga destination. It lies in the Talares de Madariaga on the shore of Laguna La Salada Grande and is part of the La Salada wetland complex. This landscape, which covers about 600 square kilometers, includes fields and lagoons. The reserve preserves a portion of the original landscape of the Pagos del Tuyú and protects the native Espinal. Its surroundings are also significant for birdwatching and ecotourism.

Guided visits to the Reserva Natural Provincial Laguna Salada Grande can be arranged by contacting the park rangers in advance. Puesto La Invernada, an old outpost of Estancia Juancho Viejo, offers a glimpse into the region’s rural past. The Sendero Talares de Lomada is on the urban grounds of the Puesto, at Ruta 74, km 5.5. You can walk the trail with a park ranger and observe natural processes, history, and the ecological role of the different species.

Fee-based sulky rides and horseback rides are also offered at Puesto La Invernada: Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., by prior reservation. Check availability before your arrival. Recorridos Rurales offer another perspective on the Partido. These routes follow country roads to various places, including shops, bars, train stations, and lagoons, and provide insight into rural culture.

Getting there and choosing a hotel

Ruta Provincial 74 and Ruta Provincial 56 are the access roads to General Juan Madariaga. They are the two named routes to consider when planning your road trip. Then decide whether the December Fiesta, the art, or excursions to the lagoons should shape your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in General Juan Madariaga, you can choose your travel dates to match your main interest. Guided visits to the Reserva require advance contact with the park rangers; horseback rides at Puesto La Invernada require a reservation.
