The octagonal layout of Plaza Centenario and the neo-Gothic Santuario Nuestra Señora de Luján opposite it give Uribelarrea a distinct historical character. In Cañuelas Partido, a listed estancia, the history of rural work, Creole cuisine, agriculture and polo add to the picture. As you plan your trip, consider whether architecture, agricultural history, regional cuisine or sport is most important to you.
Architecture and rural history
Plaza Centenario is in the historic center of Uribelarrea. It has an octagonal layout, with diagonals converging in the center, from where the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Luján is visible. Opposite the square stands the neo-Gothic Santuario Nuestra Señora de Luján, inaugurated on December 18, 1890. Pedro Benoit designed both the square and the church. For architecture enthusiasts, the distinctive shape of the square and the church opposite are two closely related features of the town center.
The Museo de Máquinas y Herramientas Leopoldo Rizzi is housed in the former shed of the railway station, built in 1892. Its exhibits cover the history of rural work and agricultural production in the partido. The former El Castillo Finaco factory in Uribelarrea is also part of the area’s industrial architecture; it dates to the 1930s. Check the current opening hours in advance if you plan to visit the museum.
The historic main building of Estancia La Caledonia offers another glimpse into rural architectural history. It comprises two connected houses, another dwelling that probably dates from Arnold’s time, the old jagüel, a dovecote, and a production area with three sheds, ancillary rooms and a work area. The tentative dating of the dwelling remains a supposition.
Estancia San Martín de Vicente Casares is located in Cañuelas Partido at kilometer 50.5 of Provincial Route No. 205. Its main building is protected as a National Historic Monument. The first export of Argentine wheat to Europe took place from the estancia in 1871. This connects the history of the main building with a specific chapter in Argentina’s agricultural history.
