The 107-kilometer coastline shapes the character of Boumerdès Province. The province has 57 beaches, of which 47 are approved for swimming. As this number may change, check the latest information before going swimming. The length of the coastline and swimming approval answer different questions: one describes the extent of the coastal area, while the other is relevant when choosing a place to swim.

For planning, you can consider three interests side by side: swimming, outdoor activities and cultural discoveries. Boumerdès Province brings these themes together without requiring you to decide on a fixed itinerary in advance.

Coast and Nature Activities

The province’s green spaces, forests and bodies of water, including the Keddara Dam, are suitable for sports, hunting, climbing and hiking. Nature therefore extends beyond the coast. Water features in two contexts: in the coastal figures and in the province’s bodies of water. Forests and green spaces provide a different landscape for outdoor activities.

Archaeology, Crafts and Cuisine

The province’s archaeological sites include the Kasbah of Dellys. This provides a specific archaeological point of interest alongside the coast and nature activities. It is a distinct focus when choosing a theme: the Kasbah is a named place, while outdoor activities are connected with the province’s green spaces, forests and bodies of water.

Regional crafts in Boumerdès Province include ceramics, pottery and basket weaving. The Kasbah of Dellys belongs to the archaeological sphere; these crafts offer a different cultural emphasis. A specific place and several regional craft traditions can therefore be considered side by side.

Pastries and traditional dishes are also part of the province’s culinary traditions. Alongside crafts, they broaden the cultural perspective beyond archaeological and landscape themes. When weighing different interests, you can consider nature, archaeological sites, crafts and regional foods as distinct areas of interest.

Algeria in a Broader Context

Elsewhere in Algeria, there are other coastal and cultural sites with different points of interest. Tipasa lies on the Mediterranean, 70 kilometers west of Algiers. The serial World Heritage property of Tipasa comprises three sites: two archaeological parks near the present-day urban area and the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania on the western plateau of the Sahel of Algiers, 11 kilometers southeast of Tipasa. Compared with the rest of the country, this is a different archaeological setting from the Kasbah of Dellys.

The Sebeïba tradition is practiced in Djanet, Algeria, and is another example of the country’s culture. During the nine-day Timoulawine competition, male dancers and female singers compete to represent their communities. The tradition follows the Islamic lunar calendar; selected winners take part in the Sebeïba rituals the following day. During the performance, male dancers wear warrior attire, and female singers go to a place called Loghya.
