A prehistoric settlement near Lake Prespa and religious heritage spanning several centuries give Tuminec a long historical perspective. The Monastery of Saint Mary, the Cave Church and St. Mitri Church each offer their own highlights. The Kallamas Trail adds a long mountain hike to these themes; its hiking time is an important factor when planning your day.

Prehistoric and religious layers through time

The prehistoric settlement in the village of Tuminec (Kallamas) was inhabited around 7,000 years ago, during the Middle Neolithic, and lies near the shore of Lake Prespa. This date goes far back beyond the area’s religious buildings and artistic heritage.

Monastery and church art

The Monastery of Saint Mary lies northeast of Tuminec, 200 metres from the shore of Lake Prespa. It was founded in 1888 and is a pilgrimage site for residents of the Prespa region, visitors and foreign tourists. The monastery festival is celebrated every year on 30 July. Anyone wishing to combine their trip with this occasion should check specific event details in advance. In terms of chronology, the story spans the Neolithic settlement, the churches of the 13th and 14th centuries, and the monastery’s foundation in 1888.

The Cave Church of Saint Mary lies in the village of Tuminec, near the Monastery of St. Marena and close to the border with North Macedonia. It is a 13th-century cultural monument, known for the Byzantine iconographic style of its frescoes. St. Mitri Church is located in Tuminec’s cemetery and dates from the 14th century. Its famous frescoes are attributed to an unknown artist and resemble the icons of the Zrze Monastery in Prilep. The churches therefore differ both in their dates of origin and in their documented artistic connections.

The Kallamas Trail

The Kallamas Trail starts in the village of Kallamas and is an 11.5-kilometre circular route that takes around 6.5 to 7 hours. After a 2-kilometre climb along a mountain path, the trail reaches its highest point at 1,106 metres above sea level. Good hiking equipment is required. Given its duration, it makes sense to plan the trail as the main activity of the day.

Lake Prespa and protected area

The area of the wider Municipality of Pustec corresponds in extent to the Lake Prespa catchment area, which is part of Prespa National Park. The park protects the area around the lake, with its forests, meadows and hilly, mountainous terrain. Venjat e Kallamasit (Juniperus excels) is also designated a natural monument within the national park, with scientific, educational and tourist value. Alongside the specific church sites, the wider landscape of Lake Prespa is another distinct aspect of a trip to the area.
