The Gërmenj-Shelegur Nature Reserve gives a stay in Gërmenj a clear focus: mountain landscapes, forests and nature observation. The Gërmenj Nature Reserve is designated in Albania as a managed nature reserve, Category IV of protected areas. Planned recreational activities include long walks and picnics. This makes it well suited to a nature-focused stay, with mountain ridges, forest habitats and distinctive natural features each offering a different perspective.
Mountain Landscapes and Habitats
The reserve extends along the Kamenik–Mali i Vashës mountain ridge, at elevations of about 1,000 to 2,043 metres. Within this elevation range are deep valleys, steep and gentler slopes, and peaks over 2,000 metres. Species-rich meadows and clearings in the forest add to the mountain scenery. Visitors interested in the landscape can therefore take in several aspects of the protected area rather than equating it only with its peaks.
Smaller landscape features also shape Gërmenj: the wetlands have landscape and floristic value, while the cold springs have tourist and recreational value. Mali i Koziakut forms the magmatic slope of Gërmenj. These features draw attention to different aspects of the area—wetland habitats, springs and geological formations.
The pine, beech and fir forests provide important habitat for brown bears, wolves and roe deer. The protected area is also home to six types of natural habitat, three important plant species and three endemic species. Forest habitats and plant diversity are therefore distinct aspects of the nature reserve alongside its mountain ridges.
A Group of Trees and a View Across the Lake
One distinctive natural feature is the Tisi i Golos group of trees in the Gërmenj-Shelegur area. It covers about two hectares and is a distinctive tree formation in Albania. The trees reach up to 13 metres in height, and their trunks measure 18 to 22 centimetres in diameter. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a different scale from the expansive mountain ridges: here, the focus is on a single group of trees and its dimensions.
Another feature is Lake Shelegur. From there, the ridges of the Nemërçka Mountains can be seen beyond the water. The two places offer contrasting landscape impressions: at Tisi i Golos, the distinctive group of trees; at the lake, a view across the water towards the mountain ridges.
Planning Your Journey and Stay
Gërmenj-Shelegur can be reached via the Korçë–Ersekë–Leskovik national road. Between Radan and Gërmenj, a sign points to the access road; the sign is 25 kilometres before Leskovik. For finding your way there, both the road and the specific sign between the two places are useful landmarks.
When looking for hotels in Gërmenj, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: long walks, the forest and mountain landscapes, or individual natural features such as Tisi i Golos and Lake Shelegur. Before visiting Tisi i Golos, it is a good idea to check the trail conditions, as they may change.
