The Congress Museum is now housed in the building where the Congress of Lushnjë met from 21 to 31 January 1920. The Congress is associated with the consolidation of the Albanian state and its national institutions. Here, history comes to life in a specific place that also marks an important chapter in the country’s history.
The city and the western Albanian lowlands
Lushnjë lies in west-central Albania, in the heart of the Western Lowlands. The city is situated on an extensive plain connected to the Adriatic coastal areas and the major cities of central Albania. Thanks to its geographic location and well-developed transport network, Lushnjë is considered easy to reach and an important connection point in the region. The cityscape and the agricultural character of the lowlands offer a rural perspective alongside the history.
The Congress Museum in the historic house
The Congress Museum is located in the heart of the city. The house dates from the first half of the 19th century and is a two-storey building in the style of houses in Berat. Its historic urban architecture has been preserved. It opened as a house museum on 21 January 1960. The collection includes original documents, historical photographs, and objects associated with the delegates and the developments of that time. The architecture, building, and collection thus connect the site of the Congress with its history. A visit offers an educational historical experience.
A broader perspective at the Historical Museum
The Historical Museum of Lushnjë documents local history from antiquity through the 1980s. It preserves around 2,000 objects, including archaeological remains, Neolithic objects, and ethnographic artifacts. Other topics include local traditions and rural life, as well as agrarian reform, education, and healthcare. The museum complements the focus of the Congress Museum: rather than a single event, it presents different periods and aspects of local history side by side. The Historical Museum was inaugurated on 21 November 1990.
Archaeological traces and remembrance
The archaeological finds also span a broad period. The earliest object discovered in the city of Lushnjë dates from the Eneolithic period. In the Kadri Qystri neighborhood, traces of a settlement from the Illyrian city period were found in 1989. Traces of an early basilica and numerous pottery fragments were also discovered in Lushnjë; experts date its construction to approximately the 4th to 6th centuries AD.
Another place of remembrance is the Memorial to Political Persecution. During a commemorative tour on 24 August 2026, flowers were laid there for the victims and for those who were politically persecuted during the communist dictatorship. Participants from Tirana joined, while others joined the tour directly in Lushnjë.
Agriculture, cuisine, and lakes
The fertile lowlands and close ties to agriculture create favorable conditions for agritourism and rural tourism in Lushnjë. You can discover local products, traditional cuisine, and experiences connected with agricultural life. This complements the museums’ cultural focus with topics shaped more by the landscape and everyday life in the region.
The lakes also differ in location and character. Lake Kasharaj is 2 km from Lushnjë, in the administrative unit of Karbunarë. A bridge dating from the 12th to 13th century, still passable today, is nearby. Lake Gjyshaj is 15 km from Lushnjë, in the administrative unit of Ballagat, amid picturesque scenery near the Darsia hills. Lake Kupas is also 15 km away, in the administrative unit of Hysgjokaj; it is used for fishing and picnics. For planning purposes, the comparison provides a clear guide: Kasharaj is closer to Lushnjë, while Gjyshaj and Kupas are both farther away and offer different landscape and leisure attractions.
Another place to visit is the Church of Krutje, near the Lushnje–Fier road. It can be reached by car or bus. Together, the museums, agriculture-focused experiences, and the various destinations in the surrounding area offer several ways to plan a trip around history, landscape, or both.
