Ancient Cities and Monasteries
The ancient city site of Apollonia covers about 120 hectares, enclosed by around 4.5 kilometres of defensive walls. Surviving structures include the Odeon, the library, a portico and villas with mosaics. The complex also includes the Monastery of St Mary and a Byzantine church dating from the 14th century. Apollonia was also an important point on the trans-Balkan Via Egnatia. The archaeological park is about twelve kilometres from Fier, on a hilly plateau overlooking the Myzeqe Plain and the Adriatic.
Byllis was founded between 370 and 350 BC and was the capital of the community of the Bylliones. The city stands on a plateau at an altitude of 547 metres and overlooks the Vjosa Valley. Its agora included a theatre, a stoa, a stadium, a gymnasium, temples and other public buildings. The archaeological park is next to the Fier–Tepelenë national road, 1.5 kilometres from the village of Hekal.
The Orthodox Ardenica Monastery, about 18 kilometres south of Fier, dates from the 13th century and was founded in 1282. The monastery contains sacred frescoes by the Zografi brothers. The surrounding area offers panoramic views of Lake Karavasta and the fields of Mallakastra. At the 7 churches of Karavasta, you can explore the interiors and see preserved icons and carved walls. Lagoons, Coast and Trails
Divjakë–Karavasta National Park covers more than 22,000 hectares. Lagoons, coastal pine forests, sandy beaches, marshes and salt pans define the landscape. The internationally protected area is listed under the Ramsar Convention. The coastal pine forest in Divjaka has natural trails for hiking and cycling; trail conditions may change.
Divjaka Beach stretches for about 15 kilometres. Fine sand and calm, clear water are among its features; the beach is suitable for family holidays and ecotourism. Beach services and conditions may vary seasonally. Pelican Island itself is closed to the public. Its breeding colony can be observed from viewing towers and on nearby boat tours. Local Culture and Cuisine
In Fier, the Bylis Theatre was founded in 1971 and hosts performances, premieres and festivals. The Vilson Kilica Art Gallery presents exhibitions of painting, sculpture and contemporary art. Programmes and exhibitions change. Libofshë offers its own cultural perspective: the town has 15 churches, four of which are protected by the state as cultural monuments. Cfiri Castle in Mallakastër is a medieval stone fortification and a Category I cultural monument in Fier District.
The Seman rises near Kuçovë, where the Devoll and Osum rivers meet, and flows into the Adriatic after about 85 kilometres. Libofshë lies on the Seman; around eight kilometres of Adriatic coastline are nearby, including Ndërnenas Beach for seaside activities. In the local cuisine, Roshnica, a typical Fier dish, consists of small pieces of lamb served with fresh salad and local herbs. For Mish i Pjekur në Guralecë, meat is slowly cooked on hot stones to preserve its natural aroma and flavour. Fresh fish and seafood play an important role on the coast near Fier, and availability depends on the season. Traditional fishing is associated with the Karavasta Lagoon. Restaurants serve dishes featuring eel, sea bass and blue shrimp, also subject to seasonal availability.
