Barquisimeto can be explored through an annual pilgrimage tradition and a diverse urban history. Churches, monuments and cultural sites tell the story of different eras, while parks offer other points of interest. You can decide whether to focus your trip mainly on the Divina Pastora procession, architecture and history, or green spaces and wildlife.

The Divina Pastora Procession

Every year on January 14, more than four million faithful gather in Barquisimeto for the Divina Pastora procession. It covers 7.5 kilometers from the village of Santa Rosa to the cathedral. Venezuela’s tourism authority describes it as the world’s second-largest pilgrimage and the largest in Venezuela. If you plan your trip around this tradition, the annual date gives you a specific day to focus on. Check the date of that year’s procession before you travel.

Architecture and the City’s History

La Flor de Venezuela was designed and created by architect Fruto Vivas in 1999 to represent Venezuela at Expo 2000 in Germany. The structure is located in Barquisimeto. Its story connects a local site with a specific international exhibition. Another artistic landmark is the Monumento al Sol Naciente, created in 1989 by Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz Diez. It stands at the intersection of Avenidas Los Leones and Libertador and Avenida Herman Garmendia.

The obelisk in Plaza El Obelisco also marks a significant date. It is 70 meters high, has a clock, and was erected in 1952 to mark the 400th anniversary of the city’s founding. Unlike the Monumento al Sol Naciente, whose history is associated with a named artist and a year of creation, the focus here is the city’s anniversary.

Iglesia La ConcepciĂłn, on Carrera 16 at Calle 26, opposite Plaza BolĂvar, was the first cathedral built in Barquisimeto. The 1812 earthquake destroyed it; thirty years later, it was rebuilt in a different style. Its history can therefore be read as a sequence of original purpose, destruction and stylistic renewal. In 1890, President Dr. Andueza Palacios issued a decree to build a theater in Barquisimeto; the historical account refers to Teatro Juares.

For a look at collections and exhibitions, there are other cultural sites to visit: Museo de Barquisimeto, on Carrera 15 at Calle 26, offers well-documented spaces in an artistic setting. Opposite Plaza Lara, Centro de Historia Larense presents archaeological and art exhibitions. Museo ArqueolĂłgico Militar General Jacinto Lara, on Avenida Los Leones, has four halls covering the development of the armed forces.

Parks with Different Features

Parque Ayacucho is located between Carreras 14 and 16 and Calles 41 and 43. It was inaugurated on December 9, 1924, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho. Parque del Este, on Avenida Libertador, is described instead as a recreational and sports park and covers more than 20 hectares. The two places therefore differ both in their connection to the city’s history and in their stated purpose and size.

Parque Zoológico y Botánico Miguel Romero Antoni, also known as Zoológico Bararida, is located on Avenida Los Abogados. It has extensive gardens and animals from Venezuela and other continents. This offers another distinction when choosing places based on your interests: Parque Ayacucho is linked to a historic commemorative date, Parque del Este to recreation and sports, while Zoológico Bararida focuses on gardens and wildlife.

Religious Tradition in Lara State

A historical tradition in the wider region of Lara tells of the origins of devotion to the Divina Pastora. According to the tradition, the image of the Virgin intended for the Church of the Immaculate Conception arrived in Santa Rosa in 1740. After a cholera epidemic in the region ended, devotion to the image took hold on January 14, 1856. This regional account provides a historical context for the date when the annual procession gathers in Barquisimeto.
