Capital District offers several distinct themes to choose from for your trip: wooded trails and animal areas at Parque de Recreación Zoológico de Caricuao, hiking and a cable car ride at Parque Nacional Waraira Repano, and modern architecture at Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas. You can decide what to focus on based on whether you are more interested in landscapes and animals, an activity in the national park, or architecture.

Woodland Trails and Animal Areas in Caricuao

Parque de Recreación Zoológico de Caricuao is located in southwestern Caracas, in Distrito Capital. It opened on July 31, 1977, and covers 630 hectares. Most of this area consists of protected woodland surrounding the paved paths. Large caobo, ceiba, and apamate trees provide shade along the trails. There are also kiosks and green spaces suitable for picnics. The park combines shaded paths and woodland scenery with areas where wildlife is the main focus.

Open Plains and Insights into Animal Care

The park is divided into seven areas. Among the best-known are the African and South American Plains. Animals live there on large, open grasslands, separated from the public by natural barriers and ditches. Unlike the wooded, shady trails, these areas are defined by open spaces. At Planicie Sudamericana, visitors can see typical animal species from the Llanos, the forests, and the Venezuelan Andes. Park guides provide information about respectful treatment of animals, proper feeding, and the importance of veterinary care. Thus, in addition to observing animals, the park also focuses on animal care and responsible treatment.

Hiking and Cable Car Rides at Waraira Repano

Parque Nacional Waraira Repano adds hiking opportunities and a cable car ride to the options. Visitors can hike via official entrances or firebreaks; there is also the option of riding up on the Sistema Teleférico Waraira Repano. The options differ in how you get around: hikes follow the specified entrances or firebreaks, while the cable car provides a ride up. Check the cable car’s current availability when planning your trip.

Modern Architecture at Ciudad Universitaria

Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas was built between 1940 and 1960 to designs by architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva. It is an outstanding example of modern architecture. The campus also includes the Botanical Garden. Its construction period and credited designer make the campus a specific architectural attraction: the focus here is on modern architecture, rather than the landscapes and animal areas of the parks.

More Landscapes in the Wider Destination of Venezuela

The wider destination of Venezuela also offers other landscape themes. Morrocoy National Park is in the coastal region of Falcón state and, as a marine and coastal ecosystem, covers more than 32,000 hectares. Its named features include Cerro Chichiriviche, cayos, shallow-water zones, and mangrove channels. In southeastern Venezuela, Canaima National Park stretches along the border with Guyana and Brazil, covering three million hectares; around 65 percent of its area is covered by tepui table mountains.
