The Capilla Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is located in Puntas de Valdéz on Ruta 1 at kilometer 61. The road to Kiyú also branches off Ruta 1 in town at kilometer 61; it runs to the western end of the seaside resort. This gives you two specific landmarks for finding your way: the location of the chapel and the turnoff to Kiyú. Check road conditions before setting out.

Culture and local memory

For Día del Patrimonio 2021, a Paseo de la memoria de Puntas de Valdez was planned along the new Ruta 1 and its continuation, José Artigas. An audiovisual historical and cultural exhibition about the institutions of Puntas de Valdez was also planned. The formats had different focuses: the walk centered on memory and the route, while the exhibition focused on the history of local institutions.

Native flora was also part of the program. An activity about the area’s plant life and its use as natural heritage was planned. This was to be followed by the planting of native specimens in public spaces. The planting was explicitly linked to the preceding flora activity; both program items focused on native plants and their significance as natural heritage.

Another program item planned for 2021 was a parade by the Aparcería de Puntas de Valdez and other institutions through various parts of the town. The planned program thus ranged from local memory and institutional history to natural heritage and community activities.

In Balneario Kiyú, the Sendero Eco-arqueológico Camino del Indio is located at the corner of Calle Luz Marina and Ibirapitá; the trail was inaugurated in 2020. An excursion program in Kiyú described in the 2021 ecotourism program included a six-kilometer hike through the seaside resort and along its beaches, lunch at Parador del Medio, and then a horseback ride along the Barrancas de San Gregorio. These are different formats: a named trail on the one hand, and a described program with several consecutive components on the other.

In Mal Abrigo, the railway station was declared a National Historic Monument. Mal Abrigo is in the Department of San José, at kilometer 124 of Ruta 23. The Barrancas de San Gregorio reach heights of up to 40 meters, giving the region’s landscape its own scale.

Teatro Macció opened in 1912 and offers a varied program of performing arts and music. Catedral Basílica de San José is a historic monument that reflects the region’s religious and architectural tradition. Museo de Bellas Artes conveys the town’s artistic and cultural identity through exhibitions and workshops.
