The Sendero Cacique Arapé showcases Termas del Arapey from a nature-focused perspective: it runs through native forest along the banks of the Río Arapey. Canoe trips on the river are another possible nature experience; an outdoor photo gallery adds a historical note. This gives you different options to consider when planning your visit: a trail to walk, a trip on the water, and local history.

Forest Trail and River Trip

The Sendero Cacique Arapé is about one kilometer long and starts in Zone 3 of the thermal park, in the riverside camping area. It runs through native forest along the banks of the Río Arapey and is suitable for hiking and observing native bird species and local flora. Walking the trail also lets you focus your stroll on birds and plants. Work was carried out on the trail in 2023, including an extension. Check current trail conditions before your visit.

Canoe trips on the Río Arapey run from Puente Artigas to Termas del Arapey or to the river’s mouth at Lago de Salto Grande. The routes pass through rapids and calm lagoons. These endpoints provide a clear reference when choosing a route; check whether a trip is available on your dates before planning.

A Glimpse into History

The photo gallery in Termas del Arapey is an outdoor exhibition about the history of the country’s first thermal resort. It was inaugurated in 2021. This adds a historical focus to the nature-related experiences. Check current access to the gallery before your visit.

Culture and Nature in Departamento De Salto

The wider destination of Departamento De Salto offers additional cultural and nature-related experiences. In the city of Salto, the Museo de Arqueología y Ciencias Naturales displays collections focused on archaeology and paleontology. The Museo Histórico del Río Uruguay offers a different perspective: its collections include documents and photographs, objects from sunken ships, ship models, uniforms, flags and maritime symbols, as well as old tickets and objects from life aboard ships. A visit to this museum must be arranged in advance.

A historical and cultural route of about two kilometers invites you to explore the city of Salto on foot. The building where Horacio Quiroga was born is also located on the city’s main street. The route and this biographical site offer two different points of interest for those interested in urban history and literature.

Parque Benito Solari is also located in the city of Salto. The 17-hectare park is designed in the French style and dates from 1900. Its features include numerous tree and flower species, a lake with a statue, paths, and other landscape elements. Alongside the museums and walking route, the regional offerings also include a park with a variety of features.

Free guided tours with transportation are offered at Represa de Salto Grande. Transportation departs from the public relations office in the building of the Comisión Técnica Mixta de Salto Grande on the Uruguayan bank. Check operational details before your visit. Other activities in Departamento De Salto include fishing and nature observation in Salto Chico, as well as a lit cycling path between Cuatro Bocas and Termas de Daymán. Check current path conditions before riding.
