Guaviyú can be geographically located using two rural road routes; at the same time, its border history points to a broader regional context. For orientation, the specific road connections and the historical events in the wider border region offer two distinct perspectives. The broader travel destination of Rivera adds a wider context of nature and cultural themes.

Rural Roads and Border History

The rural road UYRV 0084 runs as a road connection from Lapuente on Ruta 27 at kilometer 84.9 to Guaviyú and is 12.0 kilometers long. The rural road UYRV BR02 also runs as a road connection from Guaviyú via UYRV 0110 toward UYRV 0205 near Cerrillada and is 16.0 kilometers long. At 16.0 kilometers, UYRV BR02 is four kilometers longer than UYRV 0084. The reference points mentioned also differ: Lapuente and Ruta 27 for the first, and UYRV 0110 and the direction of UYRV 0205 near Cerrillada for the second.

On April 6, 1828, Fructuoso Rivera met with Guaraní delegates from the Seven Eastern and the Twenty-Three Western Missions in the border region known as Guaviyú. A stone and bronze stele commemorates the event in this border region in the Department of Rivera.

Landscape and Activities

In the broader travel destination of Rivera, the perspective widens to the Valle del Lunarejo protected landscape area. Its landscape includes grasslands, hills and ravines, as well as steep-sided native forest, caves, vertical rock faces and waterfalls amid lush subtropical vegetation. More than 250 species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals have been recorded in Valle del Lunarejo. The protected area's visitor center is on Ruta 30 at kilometer 237; check road conditions before setting out.

A 2024 guide lists camping for motorhomes and tents, hiking, vehicle excursions and horseback rides at Miradores del Valle. These include agrotourism rides and horseback excursions to Arroyo Lunarejo. Before making specific plans, check which of these activities are currently available.

Places and History

The broader travel destination of Rivera also encompasses history spanning different places and periods. The area around Masoller was the site of the 1904 battle that brought Uruguay's civil wars to an end; General Aparicio Saravia was mortally wounded there. Parque Gran Bretaña in Rivera was declared a national historic monument in 1981. The Cuñapirú hydroelectric dam was inaugurated in 1882 and was also declared a national historic monument. Chronologically, this spans from the dam's inauguration in the 19th century to the Battle of Masoller and the park's designation as a monument in the 20th century.

Today, well-preserved stone buildings can be seen in Valle del Lunarejo; they played an important role in the region's historical conflicts. The Ruinas de Santa Ernestina are part of the Ruta del Oro, which also includes Minas de Corrales.
