Piriápolis combines a remarkably clear founding story with a coastal promenade, harbor and hills. Francisco Piria founded the town in 1890, inspired by the grand European seaside resorts of the Belle Époque. This historical connection is reflected in the stories of several well-known buildings. At the same time, the promenade and landscape offer other points to consider when planning a stay.

The architectural history of Piriápolis

A series of distinctive dates traces the town’s early history. Castillo de Piria opened in 1897 as the residence of the town’s founder. The Argentino Hotel opened in 1930 and was, at the time, the largest hotel in South America.

Another architectural and family connection can be found at the Museo de Arte de Piriápolis (MAP). The museum is located in the basement of a house built in 1904 at the request of Lorenzo Piria. In contrast, Castillo de Piria was the town founder’s residence; the house that now accommodates MAP represents a later building and a different patron. This makes it possible to distinguish the historical connections without reducing the buildings to a single story.

Fountains and hills as distinct features

The Fuente Venus depicts the Greek goddess of love holding a water jug from which a stream of water flows. It is one of a group of three fountains. The others include the Fuente de Stella Maris on Cerro San Antonio and the Fuente del Toro on Cerro del Toro. The figure is the focus at Fuente Venus; Fuente del Toro is a life-size sculpture of a bull weighing 3,000 kilograms, from which a mineral spring flows.

The hills also offer distinct features. Cerro del Toro is 252 meters high and is one of the hills around Piriápolis. You can reach the top of Cerro San Antonio on foot, by vehicle or by chairlift; from the summit, the view extends as far as Punta del Este. San Antonio therefore offers a choice of ways to ascend and a described long-distance view, while Cerro del Toro is characterized by its height and the fountain with the bull sculpture.

Coastal promenade, harbor and public spaces

Rambla de Piriápolis is a pedestrian coastal promenade with access to beaches, shopping, a cycle path and a food-and-drink promenade. Puerto de Piriápolis is located on Rambla de los Ingleses and is a tourism and sports harbor. The harbor and promenade are therefore two specific landmarks if you are interested in the coast and harbor.

Paseo de La Pasiva is home to a handicrafts fair and a tourist information center. Parque La Cascada has 14 family barbecue areas, as well as recreational facilities, games and walking paths. These are different kinds of public spaces: the Paseo brings together a fair and information, while the park offers barbecue areas and opportunities to spend time outdoors.

Landscape and other natural features

The coastal area associated with Piriápolis extends for more than 25 kilometers and includes numerous beaches. These include Solís, Bella Vista, Las Flores, Playa Verde, Playa Hermosa, Centro Piriápolis, San Francisco, Punta Colorada, Punta Negra, Barra, Sauce de Portezuelo and Ocean Park. This coastal area extends beyond the town; it should not be equated with a single town beach.

Nature and wildlife are also part of the destination’s character. In 2025, a newly built reptile house opened in Piriápolis, housing Alternatus. At Rescate de Fauna Marina SOS, recovering birds, sea lions, turtles and penguins are cared for with the aim of later returning them to their natural habitat.

Outside the town, but within the Municipio de Piriápolis, are the interpretive nature trails of ECFA. Its facilities, as described, include a Telarium, a Plumarium, rest areas, Labyrinths 1 and 2, a viewpoint with a cultural heritage area, and an exhibition of agricultural machinery. This natural attraction is distinct from both the coastal area and the sights within the town itself.

If you are looking for a hotel in Piriápolis, you can first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: history and fountains, the promenade and harbor, or hills and nature.
