Bella Unión lies between the Río Uruguay and the Río Cuareim. The area is considered a natural setting suited to ecotourism. But the connection to the rivers is just one way in: archaeological collections and Carnaval offer other perspectives on the destination. The landscape, cultural history and festival each offer a different focus, which you can prioritise according to the purpose of your trip.

River Landscapes and Views

A lookout tower about eleven metres high was unveiled in 2020 in the Rincón de Franquía protected area in Bella Unión. It was designed to offer a panorama across Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil, the Uruguay and Cuareim rivers, and Correntina and Brasilera islands. The viewpoint therefore takes in not only the rivers but also the wider surroundings. If the tower is an essential part of your trip, check in advance whether it can be visited.

Archaeology in Bella Unión

The private Museo Arqueológico Santa Rosa del Cuareim opened in Bella Unión on 30 August 2004 and houses a collection of almost 4,000 archaeological objects. The collection is connected with Uruguay’s early prehistory and its first Indigenous settlements. It was assembled over more than 30 years from archaeological finds in the surrounding area. The finds give the collection a local grounding, while the subject also connects to Uruguay’s broader history.

The museum listing, last updated in 2019, states that admission is free to the public; visits must be arranged by telephone. The museum is frequently visited by educational institutions. Arrange your visit by phone before travelling. This lets you plan the cultural stop deliberately rather than assume you can drop in.

Carnaval and River Excursions

Carnaval de Bella Unión offers a different experience of time and culture. For five nights, comparsas parade through the city to samba with a strong Brazilian influence; the lyrics are sung in Spanish. The specific event dates vary from year to year. If you want to make the festival the centrepiece of your trip, check the dates for your travel year and plan other activities around them.

In 2019, boat trips into the tri-border area and to Brazilian and Argentine islands were offered from Estación Fluvial de Bella Unión. This offers a different perspective on the landscape from the lookout tower: the tower was designed to provide a panorama from land, while the excursions take you out onto the water. If you would like to plan a boat trip, ask about current availability and possible dates before travelling.

Plan Your Stay to Suit You

The landscape options also differ: the tower offers a planned panoramic view, while the boat trips offer a perspective from the water. Then tailor your search for holiday rentals in Bella Unión to the travel dates that suit your focus.
