A spring-fed kettle lake lies in Muir Park, surrounded by upland and wetland habitats. Ennis Lake covers 30 acres; the park was designated a State Natural Area in 1972. Marquette County offers a concrete introduction to its varied landscapes, as well as to the history and activities that can shape a stay.

Landscapes and designated natural areas

The protected areas each have a distinct character. Germania Wet Prairie lies on terraces above the Mecan River and was designated a State Natural Area in 2002. The Mecan River Pine-Oak Forest is the only known old-growth white pine–black oak forest in the Central Sand Hills Ecological Landscape. Wedde Creek Savanna, meanwhile, is an outstanding example of a black oak savanna.

Distinctive areas can also be found along the waterways. The Lawrence Creek Fish and Wildlife Area encompasses 961 acres around Lawrence Creek and its headwaters. The Caves Creek Fishery Area consists of 823 acres of scattered state-owned parcels along a 14-mile corridor. Public access for fishing, hunting, and other recreational uses is provided there.

John Muir and local history

At what is now John Muir County Park, the Muir family established their first home in Marquette County after immigrating from Dunbar, Scotland. The John Muir Nature and History Route also explores his story: it is a driving and activity route that traces John Muir’s life in the county.

In Montello, the Montello Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1912. The ground floor originally housed a blacksmith shop, while the upper floor contained rooms for community events. The building’s former uses give it a special connection to local community history.

The Marquette County Historical Society grounds include the Cochrane Nelson House in Westfield, built in 1903. The Henry Ellis Section House, with early railroad memorabilia, is also located on the grounds. In the Kerst/Cant/Robinson Exhibit and Research Building, the Historical Society displays early artifacts from Marquette County’s 14 townships, four villages, and one city.

The Historical Society offers guided or self-guided visits to historic sites. If you plan to explore this part of the county’s history, check current visiting arrangements in advance. This helps you fit a cultural focus around your own travel plans without assuming a particular schedule.

Trails, water, and activities

At the Grand River Lock and Dam, an ADA-compliant path leads to a fishing pier on the Upper Fox River. The department also operates three public boat landings there: two are above the former dam on the Upper Fox River, and the third is on the Grand River. The fishing pier and boat landings offer different activities at this named site.

John Muir Memorial County Park includes a two-mile section of the Ice Age Trail. For road cyclists, Marquette County has ten scenic cycling routes totaling more than 140 miles. These route details offer two different approaches to trip planning: a named section of the Ice Age Trail in the park and a network of road cycling routes spread across the county.

Other options complement these natural and cultural highlights. Thal Acres is a public 18-hole golf course in rural central Wisconsin. An 11-acre park on the shore of Montello Lake has a beach. Each place offers its own focus, without implying that the beach has a particular swimming facility.

Plan for local experiences

Held annually in Montello, the Fish N Fun Festival is a family-friendly event centered on fishing, entertainment, and community. The Westfield Farmers Market offers access to affordable, locally grown food. Alongside nature and history, you can choose a recurring festival and a food-related offering; check specific event dates before your trip.

If you’re looking for hotels in Marquette County, first decide whether history, landscapes, cycling, or water activities should shape your stay.
