You can fish on Lake Waubesa in Mcfarland; McDaniel Park is right on the lakeshore. Along with a museum that is open seasonally and recurring annual events, this gives you several reasons to choose when to visit. If you are weighing time by the water against local history or a specific event date, Mcfarland offers different options—without every stay having to follow the same itinerary.

Parks, Lakeshore and Recreation

McDaniel Park is on the shore of Lake Waubesa. Fishing is also possible on the lake in Mcfarland. Babcock County Park includes stretches along US Highway 51 in Mcfarland. The municipal recreation plan for 2025–2029, adopted on May 13, 2025, lists water access for recreational use, a boat launch, play equipment and camping opportunities for this area. These amenities give the park a different focus from McDaniel Park’s lakeside location: here, the emphasis is on the park’s several recreational options, while there it is on the lakeside setting.

Mcfarland is listed as having a total of 16 parks, two toddler playgrounds and eight conservation areas. These figures describe amenities throughout the community, not the facilities at any one park. The inventory may change as facilities are added or reclassified. So if a particular facility is important to your plans, it is a good idea to check the latest information.

Local History: Museum and Larson House

The McFarland History Museum is open to the public on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., from Memorial Day through September. This seasonal schedule is important when choosing a day to visit: a museum visit may not fit every weekday or travel date. If you plan around its Sunday opening, check the hours again before you travel.

Another historic landmark is the Larson House, a restored Queen Anne house dating from 1898, with gingerbread details. Its year of construction, architectural style and preserved decorative details come together in one specific building. For guests interested in architecture, the house offers a different way to explore local history than the museum: rather than a museum visit, the focus is on a single historic house with a clearly identified style.

Events Throughout the Year

The McFarland Bird Festival takes place every April in Lewis Park, on the shore of Lower Mud Lake. The festival offers a seasonal reason to consider a spring visit. Exact event dates and the program may change; check the latest information if the festival is an important reason for your trip.

Scarecrows in the Park takes place every October at Arnold Larson Park. This tradition, organized by the McFarland Chamber of Commerce, invites visitors to view and vote for the creative scarecrows on display throughout the month. Dates and the program may change here, too. April and October therefore offer different event opportunities throughout the year, rather than the same offering year-round.

Food Truck Frenzy, also known as Food Cart Frenzy, is an annual food truck event organized by the McFarland Lions Club at Arnold Larson Park. Participating vendors may change. So if you want to come for the food, check in advance which vendors will be there on your chosen date. Together with the events in April and October, the food truck event adds another reason to visit; you do not need a fixed month to consider it as a separate event.

To help you decide, start by choosing what interests you most: lakeside views, fishing and park amenities, a seasonal museum visit, architecture or an event on a particular date. The museum’s Sunday opening hours and the changing event dates are especially useful to keep in mind if you want to plan your travel dates around them.
