Waterways and the National Road

Triadelphia lies along Little Wheeling Creek and Middle Wheeling Creek; both are tributaries of Wheeling Creek. The approximately 16-mile section of the National Road in West Virginia runs through Triadelphia. Much of US 40, including the section in Triadelphia, still follows the route of the old National Road. The waterways’ names and the road’s route thus provide two different geographic reference points for locating the town.

Historic bridge and mile markers

The Triadelphia S-Bridge stood at the intersection of Peter's Run and the National Road. It was named for the S-shaped curve of the road that crossed it. The historic stone bridge was replaced. At the same location, US Route 40 now crosses Wheeling Creek on a modern steel bridge. The historic name and the present-day crossing thus belong to two different periods in the history of the same site.

Markers documented along the road also add to the town’s history: the state register of monuments lists Mile Markers numbered 8, 9, 10, 11, 13 and 14 along the National Road, or US 40, between Mt. Echo and Triadelphia. The historic connection is therefore not limited to the bridge, but also includes named mile markers along this stretch of road.

Triadelphia Town Park

Triadelphia Town Park has a shelter with four wooden picnic tables, a basketball court, playground equipment and swings. The shelter has an attached kitchen, and there is also a restroom in the park. Its amenities can therefore be distinguished by picnic area, sports facilities and play opportunities.

Sports, events and wildlife

The Highlands Sports Complex in Triadelphia has indoor and outdoor spaces for sports and events year-round. The Fieldhouse has four permanently marked indoor pickleball courts. Open-play times and rental availability may change; check them if a specific offering is important to your plans. Year-round indoor and outdoor spaces do not mean that every offering is available at all times.

Bass Pro Shops Wheeling in Triadelphia has an archery range that is open during business hours. As business hours may change, it is advisable to check in advance. The offerings also include a large freshwater aquarium with native fish species and museum-quality wildlife exhibits. Sports and event spaces, park facilities and wildlife displays thus stand side by side as distinct thematic highlights.
