Charles Town’s history spans its founding by Charles Washington, African American veterans, and John Brown. A live theater, the Zion Churchyard, and the annual Heritage Day Festival complement these historical themes with a range of cultural experiences and ways to explore the area. When planning your trip, you can consider both enduring connections to history and offerings with specific dates.

Founding History and Theater

Happy Retreat is the estate built by Charles Washington. Washington founded Charles Town in West Virginia and was the youngest brother of President George Washington. This connects the town’s founding to a specific family relationship. The Old Opera House is a live theater in the heart of Charles Town and stages six major productions each year. If you’d like to plan a visit around a performance, check the schedule for your travel dates. The town’s founding history and a recurring theater program offer two distinct cultural highlights.

Museum and John Brown History

At the Jefferson County Museum, the exhibit on Green-Copeland Post 63 covers the history of an American Legion post founded in Charles Town in 1929 by 15 African American veterans of World War I. The number of founders, their background as veterans, and the founding year provide specific connections to the community. The wagon that took John Brown to his execution is also on display at the museum. Another connection to John Brown is the partially preserved courtroom: part of it serves as a hearing room for the County Commission. In this way, John Brown’s history is represented by both an exhibited object and a preserved room that is still in use today. The Jefferson County Courthouse remains an active courthouse and is not a museum.

Churchyard, Park, and Getting Around

The Zion Churchyard contains more than a thousand graves dating back to 1815 and offers a self-guided visit. This format provides a unique way to explore the cemetery’s long history. Evitts Run Park is in downtown Charles Town and covers approximately two acres. If you plan to visit the park, it’s a good idea to check current conditions in advance.

A brochure for a walking tour of downtown was developed to encourage cultural tourists to explore the community. If you’d like to take the tour, check whether the brochure is available before your trip. A self-guided visit to Zion Churchyard and a downtown walking tour also differ in how you find your way: a visit is offered for the former, while a brochure was developed for the latter.

Event and Scenic Byway

The Heritage Day Festival is one of Charles Town’s annual heritage events. Dates may vary, so if the festival is the focus of your trip, check the dates for your travel period. Charles Town is also part of the Washington Heritage National Trail Scenic Byway. This connection adds another travel dimension to the cultural and historical themes described here. For planning purposes, it’s helpful to note the difference: the festival has specific dates that change, while Charles Town’s connection to the scenic byway does not depend on a particular event date.
