At Tomlinson Run Lake, rowboats, kayaks, and pedal boats are available to rent at the boat docks. Tomlinson Run State Park brings together a variety of ways to explore: trails for walking or biking, fishing, and time on the water. The park covers 1,398 acres along the Ohio River in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle.
Tomlinson Run: Trails, Water, and Overnight Stays
Six hiking trails, with walking times ranging from 20 to 70 minutes, offer different time frames for a stroll. The range helps you distinguish a shorter walk from a longer outing without having to plan a specific route. Biking is also possible on the trails. At Tomlinson Run Lake, you can fish for bass, catfish, bluegill, and trout.
The park also has a swimming pool with a 182-foot-long, figure-eight waterslide. Pool operations are seasonal. For an overnight stay in the park, there are 48 conventional campsites and five camper cabins; campground operations are weather-dependent. Keep these conditions in mind when planning. This way, the trails and water activities are complemented by an overnight option right in the park.
Pottery and Local Industrial History
The Fiesta Tableware Company factory tour includes a museum featuring ceramic tableware that the company has produced for more than 150 years. Seeing the pieces offers a glimpse into a specific chapter of manufacturing history. Another aspect of local production is showcased at the Hancock County Museum, where you can see a diverse collection of locally made bricks connected with New Cumberland’s former brick industry. Pottery and bricks offer two different ways to explore the products associated with the region.
A museum in Weirton also tells the story of a place: Since 2011, the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center has been located in the former Home Furniture building at 3149 Main Street downtown. Check visiting information before your visit. Another historical trace leads to Peter Tarr Furnace. During the War of 1812, the furnace produced cannonballs for the Navy. Below ground level, its foundation and the oval salamander, where the iron ore was heated, remain intact.
Another notable attraction is the World’s Largest Tea Pot: It is approximately 14 feet wide and approximately 14 feet tall. These nearly equal measurements give the unusual shape a clear sense of scale without reducing it to a single dimension.
Outdoor Activities and Excursions in Weirton
The Northern Panhandle Rail Trail offers a four-mile route in Weirton for biking, walking, and running. These three options make the trail appealing for different kinds of activity; its length is a useful guide for planning, but it does not indicate a specific walking or biking time. Also in Weirton, Starvaggi Memorial Pool & Park has an Olympic-sized swimming pool and two waterslides. Pool operations are seasonal.
On the Ohio River, on a wooded hill, Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort offers a casino and a thoroughbred racetrack. Its amenities include seven dining options, including a Vegas-style buffet, a steakhouse, and a sports bar. A spa and championship golf course are available for an additional fee; there is also a full program of live entertainment featuring national acts. Individual offerings may change. Before making specific plans, check which services and events are currently available.
