Deming combines access to the North Fork Nooksack River, old-growth forest, and a long local history. The different access routes are important for planning: a river access point in a park sits alongside a forest excursion whose trailhead can only be reached on foot or by bike.

River Access and Forest

Deming Homestead Eagle Park offers access to the North Fork Nooksack River. In the Canyon Lake Community Forest, old-growth trees stand that are up to 1,000 years old. The river and forest are therefore different focal points for a visit.

Access to the Canyon Lake Community Forest requires a 5.7-mile hike or bike ride to the trailhead. There is no public parking or vehicle access there. Factor this distance into your plans and check the current official access advisory before your trip.

The North Fork Nooksack River access point is just east of Welcome Bridge on Mosquito Lake Road. At Welcome Bridge River Access, the parking lot is closed because of severe erosion along the riverbank. Take this closure into account when planning your visit.

Getting Your Bearings on the Mount Baker Highway

The Mount Baker Highway (Route 542) runs through Deming.

Local History and Early Institutions

Deming is an old community on the Nooksack River that was platted before the turn of the century. The town’s history therefore dates back to the period of early settlement.

In 1886, Father J. B. Boulet founded a Roman Catholic mission in Deming. In 1889, settlers founded a school that was housed for four years in a converted chicken coop. These specific dates and the school’s unusual first location provide tangible points of reference for the town’s history.

Art at the Deming Library

The Friends of the Deming Library host an ongoing Foothills Arts and Crafts Exhibit. A visit may depend on whether the space is available.

A two-part mural was painted for the Deming Library, featuring The Salmon Woman and a Spindle Whorl. The motifs are connected with Coast Salish and Nooksack traditions. If you would like to see the work in person, check access to the interior in advance.

Waterfall Hike at Racehorse Falls

Racehorse Falls is a scenic waterfall hike in Deming. The waterfall drops over several rocky ledges in the foothills of Mount Baker near popular Racehorse Creek, which lies in a steep gorge. Both the rock formations and the gorge are part of the landscape described here.

Access information for Racehorse Falls may change. Check it before your hike so your plans reflect current visiting conditions.

Deming offers a range of highlights to choose from for your trip: river access, forest, local history, art, and a waterfall hike. It is especially worthwhile to factor in the relevant access information when planning a visit to the Canyon Lake Community Forest and the natural attractions mentioned here.
