Walla Walla offers several ways to shape your stay: the history of the valley and the city, historic buildings put to new uses, outdoor art, and activities at Bennington Lake. You can give more weight to museums and downtown, or put nature and trails at the center of your plans, without turning them into a fixed itinerary.
History in Buildings and Exhibitions
The Fort Walla Walla Museum is located on the grounds of a 19th-century military fort. The museum includes Pioneer Village, with 17 buildings: 15 original buildings from within 30 miles of Walla Walla, and two reconstructions. The exhibitions cover early contact between American settlers and Indigenous communities in the Walla Walla Valley, as well as the development of agriculture. Both historic buildings and the region’s history are therefore central here.
The Kirkman House Museum has a different focus. It is housed in a large residence that William and Isabelle Kirkman completed in 1880. The museum features permanent and changing exhibitions and hosts events about Walla Walla’s early history and everyday Victorian life. The visitor program may change, so check the latest information if you plan to visit.
Historic Architecture, Theater, and Art
The Gesa Power House Theatre is housed in a former gas plant building that was converted into a theater for live performances in 2011. A performing arts venue in downtown Walla Walla, it has 300 seats. The building is listed both on the National Register of Historic Places and in the Washington State Building Preservation Commission’s register of state-protected historic buildings. Its combination of a former use and a present-day function offers another way to explore local architectural history.
The Whitman College Outdoor Sculpture Walk offers a different perspective on art: a self-guided tour of the Whitman College campus featuring 21 sculptures. These outdoor artworks add a distinct format to the museum and theater offerings. If you want to organize your days around different cultural themes, buildings, exhibitions, theater, and sculptures offer distinct options to compare.
Trails and Activities Around Bennington Lake
Bennington Lake is in southeastern Washington State, a few minutes from historic downtown Walla Walla. From there, you can enjoy views of the northern Blue Mountains. Possible activities at the lake include hiking, fishing, and paddling. This offers a different focus from museums and tasting rooms: the landscape and the choice of an outdoor activity.
The paved Mill Creek Trail runs through Walla Walla and leads toward Rooks Park and the area around Bennington Lake. The Walla Walla Valley also has paved bike paths through historic neighborhoods and agricultural areas of Walla Walla. The Mill Creek Trail is a specifically named route through the city; the broader bike-path information applies to the Valley, not just this individual trail.
Pioneer Park Aviary also adds a nature-focused option: it offers an entertaining and educational exhibit of waterfowl and land birds. Its mission was established in 1986. Outdoor options therefore range from trails and activities at the lake to an exhibit focused on birds.
Downtown, Tasting Rooms, and Getting There
Downtown, tasting rooms are located in historic buildings along Main Street and in the surrounding blocks. More than 30 tasting rooms are within walking distance there; the number may change over time. Across the Walla Walla Valley, wineries and tasting rooms are spread across six key districts. These are two different ways to get your bearings: a walkable selection downtown and a regional layout spanning several districts.
The Walla Walla Valley Transit Center is right next to the Downtown Farmers Market. Visitors can take the bus to the market. Check schedules in advance, as transit services may change.
You can use these differences to guide your hotel choice: consider whether museums, theater, and tasting rooms or activities at Bennington Lake and the trails will shape your stay more. This way, you can tailor your hotel search to the experiences you actually want to have.
