Liberty Lake combines a layered history of names with varied landscapes and activities. Liberty Lake Regional Park features wetlands, lakeshore, montane forest, and irrigated lawns; it is also home to a named loop trail, a public swimming beach, fishing, golf, and a seasonal community market. These topics offer different points of reference for planning your visit—from local history and park acreage to a set period for the market.

The Story Behind the Name

Liberty Lake was formerly called Lake Grier. Its current name refers to Stephen Liberty, a Frenchman who settled land on the lake’s west shore. Liberty Lake was also formerly known as “Spokane’s Inland Seashore.” The names have different roles: Lake Grier was an earlier name, “Spokane’s Inland Seashore” was an earlier nickname, and Stephen Liberty is the person the lake is named after. Anyone interested in the destination’s history will find both a personal connection to its naming and a former name for the area here.

Regional Park and Trails

Liberty Lake Regional Park covers 3,591 acres. Its landscapes include wetlands, lakeshore, montane forest, and irrigated lawns. The park landscape therefore extends beyond the shore: forests and wetlands are among its named landscape types, too. The 8.3-mile Liberty Lake Loop Trail runs through the park. The acreage describes the park, while the mileage describes the trail’s length—two different measures that help you understand the park and the trail.

A second size comparison is Liberty Lake ORV Park, which covers 350 acres. Liberty Lake Regional Park is considerably larger in area. So when comparing park areas, it is useful to keep the acreage figures distinct and consider the Loop Trail separately as a specific trail length.

Beach, Fishing, and Golf

Liberty Lake Regional Park is home to the only public swimming beach on Liberty Lake. Swimming conditions and seasonal operations may change; check both before your visit. Largemouth bass, perch, and other warmwater fish species dominate the lake. This gives anglers a specific point of reference for fishing at Liberty Lake.

Golf also has a named destination: Trailhead Golf Course is a 9-hole golf course in Liberty Lake. The swimming beach, fishing, and golf cater to different interests. Together with the Loop Trail and the regional park’s landscapes, they offer several themes you can use to shape your stay without having to combine them into a fixed route.

Seasonal Market

The community farmers market in Liberty Lake takes place on Saturdays from mid-May through early October. If you’re planning a visit, keep both the Saturday schedule and this seasonal window in mind. Because seasonal dates may change, check the dates before your trip.
