Stevenson combines an unusual museum theme with active pursuits and the Columbia River. The Don Brown Rosary Collection is on display in the Spiritual Quest Gallery; wind and a range of riverside activities take center stage along the river. When planning your trip, it’s worth distinguishing between culture and history, guided or self-guided activities, and conditions on the water. Seasonality, reservations and rental rules also matter for some activities.
Museums and history in Stevenson
The Columbia Gorge Museum welcomes visitors of all ages to explore the local history of Skamania and the unique geology of the Columbia Gorge. A special collection is on view at the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum in Stevenson: the Don Brown Rosary Collection is displayed in the Spiritual Quest Gallery. It is considered the largest collection of its kind in the world.
The Skamania County Fair also has historical ties to the city. Its origins date back to 1908, and its history includes a parade through downtown Stevenson. The museum and the fair’s history offer different ways to explore regional culture: one through local history and geology, the other through the development of an event connected to downtown.
Active pursuits and how they differ
Skamania Lodge Adventures offers ziplining, an aerial park, axe throwing and e-bike rentals in Stevenson. The guided zipline course winds through Douglas firs and includes seven ziplines; the longest is over 900 feet long. The Aerial Park, by contrast, is self-guided: guests move at their own pace across 19 platforms and 23 elements. The main difference between the two park activities is that the zipline tour is guided, while the Aerial Park visit is self-directed.
The e-bikes from Skamania Lodge Adventures have full pedal assist and can be ridden in Stevenson. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Riders must be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license. Check availability and rental terms before your trip. Axe throwing is open year-round and requires a reservation; check the operational details before your visit, too.
Wind and the Columbia River shoreline
Steady winds on the Columbia River near Stevenson create ideal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Bob’s Beach is one of the windiest spots in the Gorge. Both moderate westerly winds and strong easterly winds occur there year-round. The beach has restrooms, changing rooms and nearby parking. A grassy area is available for rigging, and user-friendly steps lead down to the water’s edge.
The riverside locations offer more options: Pebble Beach on the Columbia shore is suitable for wading and swimming. Teo Park is on a waterfront walking path in Stevenson that follows the north shore of the Columbia River. The activities described range from watersports and spending time at the beach to walking along the river, with no particular itinerary required.
Seasonal planning
The Stevenson Waterfront Farmers Market runs from mid-June to mid-October, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Check event dates before your trip to make sure your visit falls within this seasonal window. Along with the reservation required for axe throwing and the e-bike rental terms, the market is a useful reference when choosing your travel dates around planned activities.
