A rare sand spit surrounded by a saltwater lagoon defines Spencer Spit State Park on Lopez Island. The island also has quiet beaches and rolling farmland; it is 15 miles long and has 63 miles of coastline. When choosing accommodation, you can start by asking what you want to focus on during your trip: coast and nature, cycling, or insights into the island’s history.

Coastal Landscapes and Trails

Spencer Spit State Park combines an unusual coastal formation with opportunities for recreation on the water. The park has a campground and group campsites. It also has two miles of hiking trails and a one-mile shoreline. Facilities and conditions may change; check current visitor information before your visit.

The two-mile Iceberg Point Trail offers views from the cliffs across the Olympic Peninsula. For a different kind of trail, visit Shark Reef Sanctuary, where a short forest path leads to a rocky shore with views across the water. At the entrance to Fisherman Bay, Spit Preserve protects rare coastal dunes, wetlands, a grassy point, and about a mile of shoreline.

Tides, Nature, and Cycling

At Agate Beach, the tide determines when the tide pools are visible: at low tide, you can explore the intertidal zone. Visitors can also launch kayaks from the beach; conditions for doing so may change. If you plan both activities, it’s worth taking low tide and current launch conditions into account.

Tour de Lopez is an annual noncompetitive bike ride with routes ranging from about 5 to 31 miles. This range makes your preferred route length a practical criterion when choosing. Event dates and routes may change from year to year, so check the information for the relevant event year. Lopez Island also offers opportunities for beachcombing, hiking, birdwatching, and kayaking, even outside the event.

Island History and Local Products

The Lopez Island History Museum displays historical photographs and documents about life on the island from the settler era through the 1950s. Port Stanley Schoolhouse operated from 1917 until Lopez Island’s schools were consolidated in 1941. Together, they cover a broad historical period and a specific, dated part of the island’s educational history.

The Lopez Island Farmers Market is seasonal. For the 2026 season, Saturday market days were scheduled from mid-May through mid-September; the market is held near the Lopez Center for Community & the Arts. Offerings include island-grown produce and locally made foods such as jams, pickled products, fudge, seafood, and pasture-raised meat. Local crafts are also available; the selection may vary by season and vendor.

A guided farm tour at Watmough Bay Farm offers insights into growing vegetables and raising livestock on pasture. The seasonal program may change from year to year. Check the dates for the year of your trip.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

Most visitors reach Lopez Island by Washington State Ferry; travel by plane and boat is also possible. Rental cars and public transit are not available on the island. Take this transportation situation into account when planning your trip, and check the ferry schedule and current travel options before departure.
