Fox Island combines wooded trails, views across Puget Sound and historic sites with a range of cultural themes. Travelers choosing a destination for its landscape and history will find specific points of interest here: a trail network in DeMolay Sandspit Park, the Fox Island Fishing Pier, and buildings and exhibits connected to the island’s history. The themes are varied but easy to distinguish: nature and water are represented alongside the history of education, architecture, a museum and an events program.

Wooded Trails, Nature and Views

DeMolay Sandspit Park has a network of wooded trails. The Fox Island Nature Center is a five-acre nature center and wildlife refuge. These offer two distinct ways to experience nature: wooded trails in the park and a nature center that also serves as a refuge. When making your choice, consider whether you are more interested in the trail network or in nature and wildlife conservation. Five acres is approximately two hectares.

The grounds of the Fox Island Fishing Pier include a 1,200-square-foot accessible pier. From here, you can enjoy views of Puget Sound, Vashon Island and Mt. Rainier. Unlike the wooded trails, the focus here is on a single pier with views of the water and landscape. The two nature experiences can thus be distinguished by trails and vistas.

Historic Sites on Fox Island

Fox Island School is historically significant because of its connection to rural public education in Pierce County. Its schoolhouse was built in 1934 during the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration. Chapel on Echo Bay was dedicated on August 19, 1900. Acheson Cabin was built around 1908 as a vacation cabin on Fox Island and is among the island’s oldest and best-preserved buildings. The sequence from the 1900 dedication to the vacation cabin around 1908 and the 1934 schoolhouse shows three distinct historical connections: dedication, leisure use and rural education.

Museum and FICRA Fair

The Fox Island Museum features an exhibit about the Mosquito Fleet. The FICRA Fair’s music and food court features live music by local artists and a variety of food vendors. The FICRA Fair opening ceremony includes the “World’s Shortest Parade.” The cultural offerings also differ in format: the museum focuses on an exhibition topic, while the fair brings together music, food and a parade in an events program.

Travel Planning and Hotel Search

When planning, it helps to distinguish between a trip for a specific event date and a stay based on personal interests. If the FICRA Fair is the reason for your visit, check its current dates in advance.
