The Polson Museum and the 7th Street Theatre offer two different ways to explore the history of Hoquiam and Grays Harbor: local collections and preserved theater architecture. Planning for outdoor activities also has practical starting points—from using high tide to plan birdwatching to choosing walking loops and beach activities. This lets you choose what to focus on based on your interests, rather than reducing the different offerings to a single theme.

Collections and Theater History

The Polson Museum houses the most extensive local collection on the history of Grays Harbor. Its photo collection includes more than 15,000 items and provides a particularly comprehensive record of the harbor area’s history. Alongside regional history, the focus also includes photographic records of the harbor area.

Built in 1928, the 7th Street Theatre is one of the few surviving atmospheric-style theaters on the West Coast. Its interior evokes an open-air theater, with a painted sky ceiling featuring clouds and sparkling stars above the auditorium. The building’s recognitions came at different times: it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. In 2008, it became the first building in Hoquiam to be listed in the newly established Hoquiam Register of Historic Places.

The theater hosts performances by touring musicians, theatrical productions, and a monthly film series. If you want to attend a particular show, check the dates before your trip. The Hoquiam Olympic Stadium is also historically significant: its direct connection to federal New Deal relief programs is the basis for its historical importance.

Tides, Trails, and Beach Activities

For observing shorebirds on the Sandpiper Trail at the Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, high tide is the key planning reference. The best time is from three hours before to three hours after high tide. To make use of this window, plan your birdwatching visit around the tide. In April and May, the refuge also offers environmental education field trips for school groups.

The Healthy Hoquiam River Loop starts downtown near the intersection of 8th and L Streets. It crosses the Hoquiam River on the Simpson Avenue Bridge, follows the river to the Hoquiam Farmers Market, and returns via the Riverside Bridge. Check local conditions before setting out for a walk. Elton Bennett Park has natural-surface trails and a loop of about 0.4 miles; the approximate length is a specific guide for choosing a trail.

At 148 SR 115 in Hoquiam, Ocean City State Park offers beach walks, shellfish harvesting, and camping. The outdoor options therefore have different planning references: the tide matters on the Sandpiper Trail, the loop length is provided for Elton Bennett Park, and the state park offers a choice of beach activities and camping. This information helps you compare the options based on the activity you want, without suggesting they form a single route.

Events Throughout the Year

The Hoquiam Elks Loggers' Playday Parade takes place every year on the Saturday after U.S. Labor Day. In 2026, it was held on September 12. If you’re planning for another year, check that year’s date rather than assuming the 2026 date applies. Together with the school-group field trips in April and May, the events calendar highlights different seasonal occasions: an annual late-summer celebration and an educational program in the spring months. When planning a trip, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between a recurring annual schedule and a specific event date.
